What do people think of DSL?

Especially ones who've also had cable? How's the service? Speed? Reliability?

I'm finally completely sick of the bastards at Comcast...50 bucks for cable that constantly drops and threats that if something's not their fault, I'll be charged. Guess what? YOU'RE FIRED!

Er, that is unless people here hate DSL. Looks like SBC is the local provider with 3Mbps up/512kbps down. Is that alright?

DSL gets me where I want to go and for only $19.95 . When I first got DSL it was costing me $50.00 a month . The price sure has come down.

I had Qwest for the longest time (DSL) and had nothing but problems, especially with outages and Customer Service. Switching to Cox Cable may have been the single greatest move I have made as far as music is concerned. Super fast speeds, awesome service, very very rare outages, great customer service. Granted, I pay a ton each month (phone and cable included) but it has been far superior in regard to speed and reliability for me here locally.

I get 3 Mbps/768 Kbps (well, "up to" anyway) for $30/ month through verizon. I love it and have never been kicked off or had any problems, beyond a couple of lost e-mails (which could be the fault of the sender's isp anyway). Check it out:

I love DSL, but then again we've never had cable. It's super fast and reliable. We've never been cut off, dropped, outaged, etc. The only problem we've ever had was once when the Labs, when they were pups, chewed thru a cord. [:o)]

Here's the lost photo of me at the Vegas gathering:

Just kidding. Actually, that is what I look like when I ponder, "DSL? Cable? I thought they were the same thing." Would someone gently explain the difference between the two for me, please?

I have cable at home & DSL at work. Honestly, I can't tell the difference. The DSL seems as fast as my roadrunner. I've never had problems with my work connection - I believe it's through Verizon. I would probably switch, but it's pretty close in price to cable, and I have a package deal.

Very nice pic MAS - it's just as I pictured you - sort of vague & gap-toothed![;)]
Cable is internet provided through a cable televison provider - supposedly lightning fast, always on, & no disconnects. DSL is through the phone lines & supposedly lightning fast & much cheaper. (I don't know about disconnects.)

Thanks. In that case, we have cable. Verizon offers DSL here, too, but I wouldn't go through them if they were the last providers on earth.

Sorry that I can't comment further on the DSL thing, Blir. Let us know what you choose.

We had DSL before we moved and have cable now. We had DSL through Southwestern Bell (SBC) and had trouble with it a few times (getting dropped or just not being able to get online period). The two or three times I actually had to call tech support, they were fast and friendly. I'd use SBC again. My phone service was bundled with my DSL, which was cool. One less bill to keep up with [;)]

We have cable through Cox now and it's screaming fast. It's always online and we haven't had any problems at all with it. It runs us about $40 a month (compared with $25 a month for DSL).

Only problems I've had is with the router. Dsl works fine. I've had cable too and it is a bit faster, but not that fast that would make me switch over from paying 13 bucks a month to something over 25. I think this applies more if you download and play games a lot.

Best to check with your neighbours or see the speed test results posted at DSL Reports (you can search by zip code). Both DSL and cable vary that performance really depends on where you live.

Hmm, looks like a mixed bag both ways. What I expected of course. Just wanted to make sure the overall response wasn't "abject horror show". Big thanks folks, especially the cool link Swampy. I think I'm going DSL just so I can say "screw off" to Comcast.

believing everything I see on tv, the cable commercial says " 6X faster than DSL" so it must be true.......
