I started this thread awhile back and I am going to start it again. I hate these stupid stickers on US cd's. Why?!? If they really need to have the top of the cd be viewable to buyers, then put the sticker outside the plastic wrap. Everytime I get a new domestic cd, I have to go through a nervous breakdown trying to remove the sticker. If you buy of those sticker cutters for 99 cents, it cuts through the sticker but messes up your jewel case. [}:)] And if you try to peel some of these stickers off, they leave the glue behind. Some of the glue, you can remove by using a piece of tape. Other glues are melted into the jewel case and it's impossible to remove it. If you give up, that glue starts attracting dust and other stuff making your cd's really attractive. [:(!]

And with DVD's, it's even worse, there's 3 of them. Is that really necessary? No other country in the world does this. What's wrong with the US record companies? THERE'S NO NEED FOR THESE STICKERS!!!

I hate them as well and would agree with you. I would guess shoplifting is the biggest factor[:(]

As a former music store manager, I can tell you that those strips across the top are a great thing when you're doing inventory (they have a barcode). They also, as coop suggested, help somewhat with theft deterrence though that's really not why they're there.

For the consumer .... you're right. They suck major ass. [:(]

A trick I always used to get them off easily was to carefully unhinge the bottom of the jewel case and lift it up. The sticker comes off easily that way.

When you buy a cd, carefully unhook the cover by the bottom hinge. Lift the cover upwards and the sticker will peel right off. If it has a sticker on the opening of the case (that silver strip they sometimes put on,) unhinge both sides of the case and pull the case apart. Just be careful that you don't break the hinge.

If it leaves a residue, try rubbing a really small amount of peanut butter across it. It will remove the left over glue. The peanut butter should wipe right off.

If you have extra goo left on the jewel case use the sticky side of the strip to remove it. Just just press & lift several times quickly.

For those "sealed" stickers on the top edge of the CDs and the edges on DVDs, I use a razor to cut it. Open the jewel case, and then peel the stickers off.

For the sticky crap left on, use rubbing alcohol (99% Isopropyl) that is available at almost any drug store for cheap. Just be careful if you use it on the artwork or CD, as it will remove some of the ink too if the alcohol saturates into the paper/disc.

Heating up the sticker/glue with a blow dryer first will make it easier to remove, if you don't want to use rubbing alcohol.

I stopped worrying about the jewel case loooong ago. I mean, come on... it's a stupid piece of plastic that you keep a cd in! The cd itself is what I freak out on. That shit can only be touched on the sides and must be placed in its case after use upright, every time, all the time[}:)]

After years of frustration with the broken case, especially the little circle deal in the middle that holds the cd, I finally gave up worrying about it as well

Empty jewel cases are pretty inexpensive in bulk at places like Staples, which is perfect for the anal retentive sort like me.

Those damn trademarked green Rykodisc cases, though, really piss me off. Bastards.

Aye, that's a bit o' a different [i]case[/i]. They also come in colours like green and orange[;)][:p]

Duct tape takes off most sticker residue. Press down hard, pull and repeat process over and over again. If the sticker was old and brittle and the residue is hardened, you can try heating the area with a blow dryer (make sure to take the disc and booklet out first). As obs mentioned, rubbing alcohol usually works, too, but not always. If all else fails, pick up some Goo Gone. I use that for taking off sticker residue on LP jackets.

I admit that I only completely remove security stickers if they're on the side or bottom. On the top, I just perforate them along the edge and leave them there. (Unless they aren't perforated, but most CD inventory stickers are.)

Can still remember the days when people used to bitch about the longbox. And then, when the longbox finally died, they bitched that the jewel cases were sold loose...
