In Philadelphia, a famous cheesesteak restaurant put up a sign, This is america, when ordering please order in English. Well do you see anything wrong with that?
A latino activist said it is causing trouble and it is racist.
Is it racist to ask people to speak in the language that you understand? If you are the owner, and the place is in america? I think the whole thing is stupid and some people just look for a reason to argue.

Personally, I'm offended by your post, Philly. It shows a disregard for the latino population in particular, and all non wasp's in general. We should be bending over backwards to see that the people that chose to move here (legally and illegally) are made to feel at home, and if it means that we give up part of our national identity and history, not to mention American pride, then so be it. We do, after all, live in a global village, and we owe it to the world to allow others to continually kick up in the nutsack as payback for all the terrible evils our ancestors did. You see, we invented slavery, racism, the caste system, genital mutilation in the name of religion, communism, death cults, etc etc. We deserve to pay for all of our predecesors sins. So what that we're forced to have to become bilingual and lose what makes us Americans.

I can totally understand the "Please order in English" but forwarding it with "This is America" is admittedly asking for trouble.

"This is America...speak English"?! I thought we threw those bastards out. I could see perhaps "This England...speak English" or "This is France...speak French", but this isn't quite the same is it?

While the delivery may have a provocative thrust to some, the message is dead on. A nation that is built on immigration should protect one of the few things that truly bind it's people together: language.

Very well put Marv. We do need something to bind us together. Something we all share in order to live together and grow. I'm all for keeping your heritage. But you need to remember where you are. My wife is spanish, trust me she wouldn't be living the life she does in any other country. Every other wave of immagrants were forced to assimilate and learn the language. They did and grew...and grew and grew. Look at the people that do not speak english at all. Do they own businesses? Do they own anything? House? Car? No. In order to move up, you must communicate.

Oh and Hutter, that sounds like something you would say on another site. Hmmmmmm what was that one again?[;)]

What fucking message?! Some asshole wants to order a cheesesteak and a provocative jerk wants to give him a hard time. He's free to say "Only english spoken here"...he's being a wank with his preamble though. Why is it so hard to call a spade a spade?

Language isn't binding us in this case...it's being used as a weapon to divide. Language isn't mentioned in the Constitution...a lot of great ideals are...THAT's what binds us for fucks sake. This is about some jerk with a sign, nothing more.
