First, I buy a ton of cd's. I used to go weekly to the used record stores but the good ones have all but disappeared or really went downhill. If I'm in Target or Best Buy, I will always pick up a CD less than $10, usually from the Emerging Artists pile. I also buy a lot online, usually from half.com or ebay but also from the small labels directly.

I also (ahem) obtain quite a lot from Slsk on the obscure and out of print stuff. I have only purchased one CD from itunes ever, The Best of The Pressure Boys, which I have been unable to find anywhere or I would still buy it.

I would say, on average, I PURCHASE between 5-10 cd's per month.
For Instance, I was in Target this weekend, bought the new Keane and Cute Is What We Aim For CD's. How's that Marv???[:D]

Besides Amazon.com cd now. I use file sharing. and marvymar, i don't wanna be frank i'm kinda fond of Chuck[:D]

A - Stuff I'm really married to, I'll always buy. I like physically owning, no matter that the T&Cs say I don't "own" it - F you!
B - Stuff I like a lot, I'll typically sample online then often buy it.
C - Stuff I run across in stores, online notices, used bins, etc, that's nominally interesting, I'll pick up at a low baseline rate.
D - Rare stuff that I really want, I'll occasionally buy if it's not too expensive.
E - Rare stuff that I don't really "need" or would be impossible to financially justify, I'll DL.
F - Various things that are below my absolute "need" level but are good and worth listening to, I'll DL.
G - I rarely ever get protected stuff from iTunes or other online vendors - it's either physically owning it or not at all.
H - Crap that I'll sample on the Hub or Obscure forum that sucks, is of poor quality, badly tagged, or otherwise not worth the ass-residue on my shorts, I'll vigorously delete.

#3 - Ideal Copy, Amazon.com or Djangos.com (for used CDs)
#4 - the occasional, increasingly infrequent visit to Tower or Virgin for sale or clearance stuff.

I've been thinning out my CD collection a bit, but there will always be well over 2000 in my collection that I won't part with.

1) Online small retail (Ideal Copy, AB-CD, Parasol, Opal)

2) Download service (iTunes and eMusic) Mostly independent bands I choose to support but don't feel the need to own the physical CD. Single tracks when a get that nostalgic urge for a song I haven't heard for years.

3) Used - EBAY (mostly rare and OOP)

4) Hub - Mostly stuff I want to sample and stuff I all ready own on vinyl/tape. Stuff not available on CD or OOP. Imports not easily available or cost prohibitive.

I aquire music from pretty much all of the above.

- I'll go to major chain and small online retailers for new releases that I simply need right away and for which I need the bonus disc / limited release / whatever marketing gimmick. HMV, Virgin, Tower, Best Buy, CD Universe, CD-Wow, Deep Discount CD and Ideal Copy: After tax, s&h whoever has the best price, gets my business.

- Nowadays, I go into the major chain brick & mortar stores really for bargain bin and marked-down items. Also for offerings that are just not available at You Music like singles, limited editions, certain compilations and import discs.

- You Music - An online retail spinoff of BMG (mail order service). At $5.99 per disc and free s&h, it's hard not to wait to get it from there. Also a great way to flesh out my collection with all that music I never really wanted that badly enough to pay full price for or for back catalog on artists I'm just beginning to buy. Not to mention a really cost effective way of replacing vinyl and casettes I already own. It really is a bargain basement with no obligation to buy anything other than one disc per month. Keep in mind though, that it's basically a meat & potatoes kind of place - you won't get special editions or exotically packaged discs from here.

- Brick and mortar used CD shops. Again, it's all about the bargain. I spend a good $1,000 a year on music. And that's [i]after[/i] all my bargain hunting - imagine if I paid full price at Virgin for everything! [xx(] But I love experimenting. I'll buy an album based on it's cover, review or artist affiliation. No way am I gonna play Russian Roulette at full price. Again, another way to flesh out the collection with back catalogue.

- eBay: Just an amazing place to get something on the cheap, something rare or something out of print. Also really good for bootleg material.

- Peer to Peer networks: I don't care what anybody says. If it's out of print, I'm doing what I have to do to aquire it. If it's an artist I don't want to pay for, I'm getting it for free. And guess what? Most of the time, I'll wind up liking them and will buy something from them legitimately. That's money they'll never have seen were it not for peer to peer networks. Because I'm a collector and I need to have the CD. I find an artist I like and I'll buy from them always. I go to the concerts, buy the t-shirts and the DVDs. The music industry wishes every music consumer was like me [}:)]

Amazon.com for 95% of everything ranging from music, films to books, magazines, and video games. The rest of the time, maybe at an actual Tower Wreckords, Best Buy, or Circuit City when they're having a sale. What's hmv?[}:)]

Small Mom 'n' Pop (brick & mortar) used CDs/ albums shops, you guys here on the NWO, and slsk.

When a band I love releases something new, I still get all excited and run out and buy it the day it's released. Almost everything else comes from iTunes.

Lately, a combination of free downloading (= freeloading?) and buying used CDs from eBay or Amazon.

Music zone is cheap in the UK so record stores but I've also bought CDs online. I'll only buy mp3s when you can't get CDs at all and they have computer entertainement systems built into your home, like really futuristic and powerful like a million times mopre stabel than today's computers.
