New Wave Outpost Forum

One thing that I've noticed on this and a lot of other forums is the extreme lack of respect for others when stating one's opinion.

It is extremely disheartening to have someone come straight out and discount one person's opionion because they disagree with what that person said. There is a way to do it graciously and not offend anyone. No one is wrong for having a different opinion and they should be treated the same way you would treat someone who agrees with you!

Are people so arrogant that they now think that their opinions are actually facts?
And do they actually think that we pay attention to THEM and their opinions more than anyone elses?

Then again, I could be too sensitive to this issue and miss some of the 'humor' in the statements made on this board. Was it a joke or are you now back-pedalling?

And before anyone thinks I'm talking specifically about them, I'm not. This happens in other forums as well, so NO ONE here is even being thought of as I write this, although it does happen here.

Just remember that when someone posts their thoughts or feelings on any issue, it is their right to do so. And it is also our right to disagree (if we feel so inclined). But the proper way to respond is not to attack them, but to state YOUR opinion.


As I've said so many times before, this is MY opinion and it should be taken that way. It is not a fact, nor is it a new rule for NW Outpost posters to follow. Just an opinion and an observation.

P.S. And I've refrained from using that 'opinions are like assholes...'line but I thought I'd let you know that I purposely did not use it because it was too cliche.

Spaz, it just ebbs and flows. I think there's different things you're seeing.

1) There are groups of people here who've established a kind of a harsh repoire with eachother that's almost a running joke. This can be misunderstood without the full perspective, but it's mostly confined to NNNW.

2) There's the occasional lashing out at a few folks or posting habits that people find consistently annoying, again which can be misunderstood without full perspective. I'm not saying it's all justified.

3) But what you might be talking about most is the obtuse responses in the really serious music posts. I do think those deserve an extra measure of respect since that's what MikeP founded this site for. Some of it's just flippant dismissal that shouldn't be taken seriously at all (Spandau Ballet, Haysi Fantayzee, all Canadian music, etc), while some of it's really stupid ego self-stroking. I don't think the latter escapes peoples' judgments, voiced or not. I'm sure there's a silent jury that's put certain people in certain bins to be routinely dismissed. Hell, I'm sure I'm one of them! [B)]

This has Colourfield written all over it.

Really, in the end who cares? The friction and so called "lack of respect" makes for a far more engaging read than the threads where there is a group ass kiss in progress.

Just my opinion.

I just refrain from the topics that run contrary to my beliefs especially the ones on religion and politics. I find it a waste of fingertips to type on the keyboard because you are not going to sway me from my convictions nor I you. There is nothing like a good bodily functions topic though[:D]

This is a valid concern and I'm glad you took the time to point it out, Spaz. While the internet provides a great deal of anonymity that makes a certain type of individual far more opinionated, vulgar or what have you, than they are in reality, there are still real people reading these posts who may be a bit more sensitive than others. Whether one or the other person is "right" or "wrong" is fodder for a whole other [i]website[/i] devoted to cyber-morality if you ask me. But in the end, the mechanics of the internet provide for quite possibly the broadest range of opinions ever. If you'll excuse the cliche (which I [i]have[/i] used myself before 'round these parts [:I]) opinions really are like assholes...everybody's got one. And here on the internet, you'll get them all.

There is alot of accuracy in Blir's previous post and I can only add that those that do have a history of back pedalling or intolerance of opinions that are not their own are pretty much recognized for what they are. We're all gown ups here, right? We grew up in the eighties after all [8D] Hell, New Wave was all about being open minded if you ask me. I would'nt worry too much about putting an opinion out there if I were you Spaz. I think the same basic social rules we are bound to in reality apply in cyber space as well:

1. If you're going to express an opinion, you're most likely going to be exposed to another opinion.
2. The right to an opinion does not guarantee the right to be taken seriously.

A salient post, Spaz. But this board is so excellent when it comes to our interplay w/ one another, and I look at it as a forum where we can all air our opinions more or less freely. There are some topics that bring out the smartalecky commentators, but mostly it's all in jest. It's all good.[:)]

I have 'orrible readin' comprehension. I read one of those sentences as, "The fiction of so-called 'lack of respect' "[}:)] I LIKED the line the way I read it.

Personally I've only really had that experience when religion or politics are brought up as people seem to love to argue the toss on those subjects.[V]
