Even though I wasn't into baseball cards per se, this brings it all home (no pun intended):

I have a couple boxes of duplicate non-sports sets of mostly 80s sci-fi that I considered putting up on eBay, but now it look like it's mostly a wash. Where have all the good times gone -- crunchewy stale bubblegum and all?[:(]

I sold most of mine when I turned 18 and spent the cash on booze, pot and records. I think I made the right choice [:D]. I don't know why but somehow I still have about a shoebox full, my favorite of which is an OJ Simpson rookie card. Maybe it'll be worth something when he dies. [}:)]

I was thourghly immeresed in the baseball card scence in the early 80's. As the article stated I too would hang out at the local card shop for hours on end. I have sold some of my cards thru the years but i still have half a closet full of cards, thousands upon thousands of them. The industry was driven by rookie cards in the 80's of players such as Strawberry, Mattingly, Gooden, and Clemens. Now the players are secondary and everyone looks for the premium inserts autographs, uniform pieces, etc. Plus they have priced the kids out of the collecting market with individual packs retailing anywhere from $2 up to $50 a piece. I have dabbled in Star Wars and Star Trek cards and I even have some Crocodile Hunter cards. They mentioned Alan Rosen "Mr. Mint" in the article, I contacted him about selling him some cards I had come into, he was an ass. The cards I had were from my fathers friend who had gotten them from a guy who had played minor league ball for the indians in the late 40's into the early 50's. He had football and baseball cards from the 50's and lots of autographed photos and cards. The guy who brought it to me found out how much the stuff was worth and wouldn't sell it to me, so he had me help him sell it. He ended up selling the whole lot for $700 to a dealer, the dealer had to be laughing all the way out the door with the stuff. There had to be at least $5000 worth of stuff in the collection. I guarntee he sold a couple of the autographs and it covered his cost for the entire lot. The guy gave me half the money but I still felt raped, you may only stumble upon this kind of stuff once in your life and I had to watch it walk out the door. I'm still pissed to this day about it.

My baseball cards are still worth cash--mostly sets from the 60's--along with ANY OTHER TYPE card that came out in the 60's!! Monkees,Rat Patrol,Dark Shadows,Tarzan,Batman.etc etc etc

If you look close, you can see blood on OJ's shirt!

Where there any New Wave cards to collect? From bands, record labels?

The closest thing I remember was NKOTB trading cards

Novelty cards aren't worth anything these days, but I did manage to find the complete Rocky Horror Picture Show collector trading card series for $15 a few years back

This is the closest thing I have in my collection. I knew I had them somewhere. A bit after New Wave but applicable. They were a freebie with Sky magazine years ago, back when the featured artists (Happy Mondays, Suede, Manic Street Preachers, Massive Attack) were making big names for themselves. I have a whole deck of them.

I was into pokemon and yugioh when they were huge back in the day. I had all the cards, the magazines...I spent a fortune.

They really did use the term 'hard core collector' in a way. One of the HCC's was magically ided by the possession of card X- worth $5000....
then they started appearing in sets...then eventually in more popular sets....then in a $40 set....then in every $11 silver edition pack....now they are down to $.11 now.

You can practically get paid to take away peoples card collections becasue they are so worthless now.

Save for Magic The Gathering...the originals to that....are worth a lot even still.

Magic: The Gathering... hahahaha. I remember when that was huge back in the 90s. At least it made dudes want to get out of the parents' basement to play other people outside. In the 80s, I collected Garbage Pail Kids cards, but I wasn't a very good collector since I used the stickers for the most part.

That dude in the article must be smoking crack.

I had a piece of gum from a 1987 Topps pack like 2 years ago, and it dissolved into some kind of wretched powder that tasted like nothing on Earth was meant to.

I still have a shoe box full of Star Wars cards in their original packaging. I'm such a geek!
