I have this process that has been running for as long as my computer has...then out of the blue (literally, I havent installed anything) svchost.exe suddenly starts using up 99% of my CPU constantly until My CPU overheats and my computer shuts down. I have no idea why. I terminate the process and my computer runs fine....only problem is...that its connected to my audio driver somehow and my audio wont run without it. I located and manually moved and replaced all my driver files as stated in the registry...and it still does this. It does it in phases...every so often it does this for a few days and then eventually it goes away. I dont know why- but I want it to stop, becasue I want to listen to my music AND run my computer at the same time.

svchost.exe is needed by the system to run various tasks. if your task manager is running at 100%, it could be a number of problems from needing to simply defragment and delete cookies or old compressed files to it being your HDD or your CPU. start with the simple stuff first.

1. try cleaning up any cookies, temp. internet files, adware, internet histroy and such.

2. run an anti-virus scan and a spyware program.

3. Check your HDD space. if you have lots of stuff like .AVI, .MPEG, JPEG, MPEG2 files that you don't use anymore, get rid of them.

4. Defragment you drive and check it for errors.

5. make sure that your firewall is on and that your windows updates are up to date.

6.disable programs that auto-start when you boot your computer up by using RUN: msconfig.

7. if you are getting other messages like program host.exe or some other program that you don't recognize, use a program called HIJACK THIS.

8. Try to stay away from p2p programs like kazza or limewire. insted use soulseeker or winmx.

9. Stay away from porn sites.

10 if these troubleshooting steps don't solve your problem, then check you HDD. if your LED light stays on for long periods of time then your HDD is strugeling, run a scandisk.

11. if your HDD is not the problem, then the next is either you RAM, or CPU.

the best way is to do a clean install and start from there.

Yes. That was what our IT people did when I had the same problem at work. Worse than the thought of losing 20 GB of mp3 files (I could not ask them to give me time to back up my 'important data') was that stupid smirk in the technician's face when he saw my avi downloads. [:I]

Excellent advice djsoss, I had the same problems with my clunker and it worked. It's good to know that in addition to great music, I can come here to get expert technical advice.
