New Wave Outpost Forum

Just curious as to whether we have more liberals, moderate, conservatives or independents on this forum. I always think of new wavers as forward-thinking liberals, after all NW/punk was a radical reaction to the stadium rock and boring top 40 crap. I'm guessing that most of us here are against the Bush regime since I can't imagine any conservative, evangelical Christian or hardcore Republican being a new waver. Am I wrong here?

I'm don't align myself with either the democrats or republicans because I'm against the concept of political parties but I would say that I'm a very liberal independent and I tend to side with the democrats especially giving the current admininstration's performance and policies.

What party do you belong to?

Read "The Girl With the Curious Hair" by David Foster Wallace and you'll find your Republican punk rocker. However, from all the friends and people I know, never be sure about anything.

Given that, I'm most certainly a Progressive Dem.

However, if you want a better record, I would create an anonymous poll for this thread. And I would rather we keep our dignity I have seen when it comes to this and not throw flames or pies,

I am a very conservative Republican and I find that the most enthusiasm shared for New Wave among my friends is from those who are conservative.

Dave Wakeling from English Beat/General Public always comments when I shout "Thatcher rules" between songs until he plays [i]Stand Down Margeret[/i] at his local concerts.

To me, Punk and New Wave culture are about challenging yourself, challenging the dominant culture, and questioning social dogma.

When growing up, most of the authority figures were aging hippies who went on and on about the Sixties and liberal California culture was dominant. To be any different, required a little bit of punk attitude.

I think you'll find New Wavers of all political stripes - including those who aren't political at all.

Folks like me will just laugh and roll our eyes whenever we hear lyrics like Morrissey's [/i]Margaret On The Guillotine[/i].

I don't consider myself a republican, but when I vote it's for conservatives, or loon-bats like Ross Perot.

Aw. It's not that bad, really, being a Libertarian. You've got some great people as fellow independence-thinkers, such as Billie Joe Armstrong (from Green Day) and Exene Cervenka/Cervenkova (from the legendary X). Sure, you've got some wack folks, but I think those people only claim to be Libertarian and are, when push comes to shove, die-hard Republicans (e.g. the guy behind that foul "Mallard Fillmore" cartoon -- ha, "foul", "fowl", seewhatIdidthere?).

Me, I used to consider myself a Republican back when I was idealistic, but now I'm kinda independent but with more of a Libertarian streak. I'll vote for whomever can promise me an end to the b.s. government feeds us, meaning my home state's governor's race (I'm from Texas) will be really interesting to me. I like what Tom Peters (a "management guru") had to say about being Libertarian: you're that because you "have economic views that are far to the right of Jack Kemp, and social views that are far to the left of Jesse Jackson." And while I do believe in SOME strong government, I do think that both Democrats and Republicans actively work to create bloat in our federal government and that neither one of them are really that much different than the other.

Does that all make sense?

Of course. I'm all for that, too, and I'm never going to even toke a joint in my life. Doesn't mean I want to prevent other people from doing that if they so choose. And I've almost always been pro-choice. Anti-choice, anti-drugs laws are little more than signs of a large nanny state that I just can't abide by.
