Just rewatched this quirky classic tonight. Beyond the excellent story and soundtrack that Sofia Coppola always seems to do so well, did anyone else notice that it has EVERYTHING 70s in it? Not just stuffed in there like retro schmaltz ornaments, but all packaged as part of a seemless piece. It's a trip, from those huge ashtrays that could hold like 20 cigarettes (WTF?)...

...this is one kickass flashback of a movie, with a scary dead-on pegging of a lot of youthful anxiety and daydreaming. Just sayin'. [:I]

Funny you should see this Blir. I watched it again about a week or so ago. What a movie. Such a delicate balance of sad, youthful electricity, contemplation and even a little black comedy. Some fantastic filmic sequences, a foxy Kirstin Dunst and a seductive soundtrack by Air. Love. Even the graphics are marvelous. I'll watch anything Sophia Coppola does.

edit: Sophia and Kirsten team up again for Marie Antoinette, due in theatres Oct. 20. The film depicts the party-hearty lifestyle of the French queen and her bounce from a gilded world to the guillotine in 1793. Hm, sounds good.

another edit: COOL! I just saw a commercial for this movie and I heard a Cure song in it! I'm pretty sure it was Plainsong.

But anyway, more to your point, yeah, no detail was too small to be overlooked. If you watch the "added value material" - the making of, etc. - you can really see the passion with which she made this movie. Her father Francis must be extraordinarily proud. I hope to see her become a really important director one day.

Remember her in Godfather III?

Yes. She's as [i]good[/i] at directin' as she was [i]bad[/i] at acting. [B)][;)]

Oh, and I did remember one thing NOT in it, or at least not in the soundtrack...the song "Ce Matin La" from the dream diary sequence in the field. It's on Air's Moon Safari album so maybe they couldn't get the rights. It's essential regardless.

<p align="justify">Obviously, Sofia's the one who inherited the talent in the family. Thank bog for that. We're already cursed with turdies the likes of nicolas cage and jason schwartzman that Sofia needs to bring back the reputation for good films the Coppolas are known for.

She is my favorite female director. I love her attention to small detail. The soundtracks to her movies are excellent.

<p align="justify">The score for [i]The Virgin Suicides[/i] was more than just a cut-and-paste job done by Air and it's one of my favourite albums so far from this decade.

Unfortunately, I'll have to take a pass on [i]Marie Antoinette[/i] since it has jason schwartzman in it[xx(] I'll be too distracted by his suckiness to enjoy the movie.
