I'm pretty sure I've said before but there's only one anime that you ever NEED to watch, and that's Bubblegum Crisis (the original from the 80's, not that 2040 crapfest.)

The rest of the anime isn't neccessary, but some of it is ok.

<p align="justify">Too damn many to mention. I could be listing here for a good hour at least. I'm mainly into 70s and 80s anime with a bit of early 90s thrown in. I hate pretty much anything that's being currently made with a few major exceptions (Katsuhiro Otomo, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Mamoru Oshii, and Satoshi Kon films as well as a few television series such as "Ghost In The Shell"). There I am... listing again! As can be seen, I am very much into 70s and 80s anime; very heavy into the sci-fi and robot genre, but also into any other kinds of shows that are well-written. Anything that's been made since 1993 or 1994 will usually look like shit to me, unless it comes from a standard creator who has made a steady body of work - although that doesn't quite work with GAINAX, who have been cranking out 100% shit since the creation of [i]Evangina[/i]. That show singlehandedly made me give up collecting - and even liking - anime in general.

By the end of high school, I had nearly 1000 videos and boxes of comics[:I] I still have some boxes of graphic novels and raw Japanese manga as well as some videos, but most of that went the way of the rubbish and recylcing bins[xx(]

When you are really not popular during high shcool, then you are extremely popular during university. I went through that to and I figure the same thing has happenned to you, XXX. [8D]
True it is that at that moment I was so bored that I had to fill up time with something.
Literature, new wave and films were my hobbies at that time. [:D]
It was really cool cause I remembered the reactions of my snob classmates when I came to school with a Clash T-shirt or with my bag filled with Cure pins.
Hehe... the old days... replaced by the new days. When your friends all turn to Depeche Mode and want to make t-shirts that say "Let's play master and servant". [:D]

You should have kept that anime... if you ever have kids, they'll probably appreciate it. As I did with my dad's Genesis' LPs and french poetry books.

<p align="justify">A lot of the anime I got rid of was on videocassette. That shit's been phased out. Also, it was in Japanese without subtitles. I used to get the most up-to-date stuff back in the day; didn't care whether it was untranslated. I remember getting to see [i]Macross 7[/i], [i]DNA^2[/i], and [i]Blue Seed[/i] when they first aired back in the mid-90s. Funny that two of those series have been translated. Eventually, I want to own every episode and movie from the [i]Urusei Yatsura[/i] series. It looks good to me, even after 25 years[8D]</p>

Most of the anime stuff today comes in DVD format and with subtitles, luckily.
Here in Argentina, there's an editorial that has acquired a rather big importance due to the fact that they translate many series done by different artists into spanish.

I worship Outlaw Star. That series made me laugh and cry..and it just floored me with its complete awesomeness. It was the best videonimated experiance I have ever had.

I really would like to know more about 70s-80s anime series....and especially their soundtracks. I saw Orion from the 80s...even though it was an American take on Japanese anime...and filled industrious 80s cheese and nostalgia...the OST rocked.
Unfortunately....it no longer exists. The tracks were taken by the record company...and left in an unprotected vault where they eroded away. (I spoke to the guy who did the soundtrack over the phone...sadly he didnt keep a copy of it).

Like I said in a previous thread, I'm a massive Studio Ghibli fan. Anything Hayao Miyazaki touches seems to turn out brilliantly.

My Neighbour Totoro is definitely one of my favourites but there are still one or two I haven't managed to get hold of.

As far as series are concerned, I never got into them in quite the same way. Recently downloaded but have yet to watch, the three parter, "Read or Die" which looks pretty interesting, and also recently managed to get a DVD release of "Puni Puni Poemi", an excellent two parter that makes fun of the whole Anime thing.

In my younger days I loved such things as Fist of the North Star, Akira and Urotsukidoji: Legend Of The Demon Womb - though in that case I have only seen the censored versions.

I love Anime to bits, but I'd take a new series of Justice League: Unlimited anyday.

I have the Japanse soundtracks to Bubblgum Crisis, however English versions of the songs were recorded, and are in the dubbed version of the anime, but do they exist outside of that? As far as anyone knows, no.

It really sucks too because a band called "Pris and the Replicants" can't possibly suck.

At least Lou Bonnevie sings in English on the AD Police soundtrack. Not that there's anything wrong with the Japanese versions, I just want both [:D]
