wow,, that was truly fascinating ! And crazy that this country has remained so isolated in this world. The pictures were very telling, and the travelogue made for some enlightening reading.

This was similar to the old USSR. My parents visited the USSR twice, in the early 70s (while we lived in Germany). It was an official InTourist trip (the only travel agency there). Their stories match those in the travelogue--constant surveillance, endless trips to "approved, tourist-only" areas, an omnipresent tour guide who hurried you along, and an efficient, clean environment on the surface. And better make sure you have no proof in your passport afterwards ! I lived in Latvia for 2 & 1/2 years right after they'd gotten independence, and vestiges of the former Soviet Union were still quite solidly entrenched. Tellingly, the former "efficiency" was exposed for the bureacratic labyrinth it really was. And the size of their monuments! As was said in the above article, what is it with communist dictators erecting enormous stone monuments of themselves, or other socialist symbols, in plain view in all major cities ? These monuments were huger than belief.

Wow. I visited the DMZ in April this year and it was chilling. At the same time, the South Koreans were building all the customs buildings, a new train station at the border, etc. as they were so hopeful and certain the two Koreas would soon be united. I'm sure that line of thinking has gone out the window...

I know where I'm going for my next vacation!

<p align="justify">I read most of the travelogue and the thread from that site and I can't shake the idea of how that city landscape looks like something out of a war game military training. If they didn't have the third largest standing army in the world and China's backing, I'd say we should take over just so we can use it to play war games and paintball![}:)] On that alone, I'm sold on getting a shitbox or PS3 for the [i]Halo 2[/i] video game[8D]

PS - Yaeh, that ugly pyramid building is a very curious structure. John Carpenter should make another sequel of [i]Escape From New York[/i], except set it in North Korea, and have Snake Pliskin land on top of that building![8D]

Watching Jericho last night got me thinking about North Korea and what if one day. Great pictures 3X .
