Nice game. Disappointing finish.

Done in by the powerhouse threats of Suppan, Molina, and Taguchi. This series reinforced the adage that the team with better pitching will prevail in the playoffs.

Endy Chavez had a very good year for the Mets. I expect he'll return to scrub status next year.

I hope the Mets can find a couple of starting pitchers under the age of 40 for 2007.

First of all, as far as the Gibby homer, there is only ONE classic call as far as I'm concerned:

"Long fly ball to deep right field, she iiiiiis ... GONE!"
(pause for about 5 hours while the L.A. crowd goes ballistic - vintage Vin Scully, letting the moment speak for itself - and then ...)
"In the year of the improbable, the IMPOSSIBLE has happened!"

I still get chills thinking about it [:D]

As for last night's catch - I was listening on the radio and the guys wouldn't shut up about how great the catch was, saying it was one of the best plays in history. Maybe they built it up for me too much, but when I finally saw the replay I was nonplussed - it was a great catch, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't call it one of the best plays I've ever seen or even one of the best homer-saving catches ever. Torii Hunter makes plays like that in his sleep.

Meanwhile I wouldn't be sad with either team winning the WS. My prediction is Tigers in 6 (they win both at home, lose 2 of 3 in STL, win it all back at home).

This however is a different matter. I didn't say it was the best "play", just perhaps the best "catch" ever in that situation. I don't recall Hunter making THAT catch in an LCS right after his coach decides to leave the pitcher in, then 2 seconds go by where heart-sunk fans are cursing it was a huge mistake, followed by stunning disbelief that he could reach that ball and save their asses!

Quarterbacks hit wide receivers in the back of the end zone all the time...but not when and how Montana and Clark did it.

Basletball players hit buzzer-beaters from the top of the key all the time...but not when and how Jordan did it.

Home runs get hit all the time with 2 gone and 2 strikes...but not when and how Gibby did it. "Tori Hunter makes plays like that in his sleep"...please, FFS! [}:)]

But alas, it won't carry the weight it could have because the Mets choked both times they had the bases loaded late in the game.

My immediate thought was - that might go down as the greatest catch ever, Game 7 NLCS.....and then the Mets lost....diminishing it's importance. It was a heck of a catch though!

Wow, Blir - I can only imagine having actually been there! I was stuck at school (UCSB) and wound up watching at a small keg party (about 10 people - 6 wildly screaming Dodger fans, 4 shocked-and-awed A's fans). That was truly a "where were you when ..." moment for Dodger fans. I'm proud to say I was at the Finley grand slam game and the Joe Table NLDS shutout of the Cards in 2004, as well as the back-to-back-to-back-to-back 9th inning HR game this year, but to be at the Gibby game ... whoa.

A quick sidenote here: UCSB is the perfect mix of NoCals and SoCals so the school was split pretty evenly on the Series. On the Friday night before the Series started I was walking down Del Playa (the big party street there) and saw a guy in an A's cap walking toward me. Out of the corner of my mouth I murmured "Dodgers in five." I didn't think he even heard me, then suddenly I heard a voice behind me shout "A'S IN FOUR!!!" After that, all you could hear for the next few minutes on the street was people screaming either "Dodgers!" or "A's!". Good times! Especially since my prediction wound up being right [8D]

But back to the Chavez catch. I do agree that IN THE SITUATION it was one of the best catches ever (i.e. Montana-Clark, Jordan buzzer-beater, etc.). All I was saying was that the guys on the radio were saying things like "that was one of the best catches you'll ever see" and while I DO think it was a sensational play, it wasn't one of the best catches I've ever seen. It wasn't even the best catch this year. The Gary Matthews Jr. one this year was better. Watch this clip (sadly it's poor footage - someone filming a TV screen) and tell me this wasn't a better catch (putting aside the fact that it was a meaningless Ranger game and not an NLCS Game 7):

One game I remember had a nice turn of events - Red Sox' 7-6 victory over the California Angels

In the 86 MLB playoffs, Dave Henderson, centerfielder -- the ball went into his glove, bounced out and went over the fence. He went on to hit a home run later in the same game. It was nice redemption.
