Does anyone have this? Are you one of those people who refuse to take a crap in a public restroom such as a resturaunt or store. If you are away from home will you make an out of the way trip back just to pinch one off? I certainly am no fan of public crappers but when you gotta go you gotta go. I am sure there is a phobia name attached to this, they got one for just about everything nowdays.

That's why you should always carry a pack of matches.

According to some place called worldtoilet.org, a place that seems to be interested in the design of public restrooms, the name of the disorder is Paruresis. Someone even wrote a paper on it:

As for me, I'll use a public restroom as long as it's clean enough. I hate when I have to go, get into the public restroom, and find that somebody's left a gift behind. Who are these people? Why do they do it? Do they take photos? Do they meet with each other later on and compare notes?

This thread instantly brings to mind the "worst toilet" scene early on in Trainspotting.

If you've ever traveled in India or China, you'll know the worst public toilets in North America are luxury by comparison!

[/quote]I hate it when I see someone use the bathroom, and then walk out without washing their hands -- this is how disease spreads! Imagine you have a meeting with them after they use the bathroom and are unaware of their hygiene issues and have to shake their hands. Thank god for Purell!

As for the phobia of using the bathroom, some people have it, others do not. Flush the toilet when you "drop the kids off at the pool" -- it masks the sound.

Yeah, went to China last year. Funny seeing that the toilets in those "five-star hotels" are nothing more than holes in the floor that you squat over (BTW I'm not talking about the restrooms in your hotel rooms--they have toilets in those. I'm talking about the ones in the lobbies/restaurants/etc.). Also, no toilet paper! Supposedly, people love to steal toilet paper to bring it back home.

Do they use toilet paper in China? In middle East they think toilet paper is dirty and just use their hand instead, since they're oging to wash them anyway and all... Or do they still use that lambs wool on a stick thing?

As far as crapping in public goes, I'm OK with it provided I can breathe in the cubicle without retching. I draw the line however at using portable toilets at concerts/festivals etc. NO. WAY.

you hafta master "the hover technic" (ask chicks about it) however number two makes it difficult unless your into "flap jacks"

In Bangalore, India, at the office building where I work when I'm there on business, they actually have bathroom attendants who spend the entire day in the bathroom, keeping it clean. These employees are not allowed to eat in the building's cafeteria, because it freaks people out.

In the Baltics' bus and train stations, they'd just use shredded newspaper or magazine, piled tidily nearby. Sometimes. We all learned to carry our own TP around. Generally, you can expect these sorts of "conditions" in Egypt, Africa, the Middle East, etc. Carry TP with you when you travel!

That may have been the case many years ago, at the beginnings of the regaining of independence in the late 1980s and early 1990s as a holdover from the Occupation, rationing and the switch to nascent capitalism and early floundering, tentative, mismanaged economies, but that is certainly not the case now. Not in Estonia at least. TP is plentiful and no one is walking around with a particularly inky, chaffed bottom nowadays.

2002 was the last time we visited. (though last time in Estonia was some time before that, I think 1997 during our honeymoon.) Our eyes really goggled the last time we were there and saw [i]real[/i] TP in the stores, altho we weren't sure if people could really afford it. We ex-Peace Corps volunteers have shared lots of Baltic bathroom stories, esp. those bus and train stations. Though I have to say Lithuania and Latvia were always the worst. Estonia was never as bad. Particularly in Tallinn and Parnu. I certainly do not mean to slander the Baltics at all. [:I] But Some of that Latvian TP was like Grit 80!
