"Dr". Limbaugh and Michael J. Fox

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this. In breaking even his own "Nitwit of the Century" award, Rush (I did my Neurology residency where????) Limbaugh has the audacity to accuse Michael J. Fox of faking or exagerating his Parkinson's Disease to gain Democratic votes. I'm sure Christopher Reeve was faking all that paralysis stuff and being on the ventilator, too.[:(!][xx(]
Demonstrating the devastating toll this disease has on people can do nothing but good, IMHO.
Again I wonder why anyone with an IQ above an icecube can claim to support a narcotic addicted dolt like Limbaugh.
All I ask for those who are so vocal in their opposition of stem-cell research is to sign a valid legal document stating that no matter what treatments stem-cell research may produce they and their immediate family will shun all such benefits.

Who cares if he apologized? He said it - his apology rings false because it was only done out of obligation.
I never thought I could be more disgusted by him, but he suprised me. Who knew he could reach a new low.
Embroyonic stem cells can develop into any kind of cell. They are far more valuable to research than Adult cell lines. Adult stem cells are already specialized and are not as valuable because they are so specific.
It's ridiculous that this has been spun as an abortion issue by "the powers that be." It is not abortion.

<br>As I understand it, the most headway is in umbilical cord and adult stem cell research. Much of this research is already being put to good use. Embryonic stem cell research is a mighty touchy subject - even for this New Wave fan. Not sure why MJF would push it for the Dems...unless he has his own agenda for having them in office? If so, he's little more than a shill [V]
PS: Did'nt Limbaugh apologize for that anyway?
Yup, he sure did, for his criticism and his aping of MJF's convulsions. He's a class act. I'll note that an apology is all you'll expect when someone repeatly acts like a complete fucktard.
MJF also pitched a commercial for Republican Arlen Spector, who supports stem cell research, so I'd say he's pitching his stance rather than party. Unless of course you think he purposefully contracted Parkinson's disease in order to dupe voters at some point in the future? Nevertheless, I'm sure he does have an agenda...most likely to get fucktards out of office. I think real "shills" are something more akin to that entire current administration putting cash into buddies' pockets on no-bid contracts or hocking family values to keep the fat boys in office. It's all a brilliant brilliant shill. Kudos for playing along.

From what I understand, Michael J. Fox has done the same commercial supporting a Republican Senate hopeful who backed stem cell research a couple of years ago.
The guy just wants the research. I don't think he cares which party backs it, as long as it gets started. Christopher and Dana Reeves were big supporters also.
Who the hell listens to Rush Limbaugh anymore anyway?
*Blir, Thanks for reminding me who the Republican was.

I don't think that's necessarily true. There are "unprogrammed" stem cells that are stored in the fatty tissue, bone marrow and probably elsewhere in the bodies of adults. But regardless, what of umbilical cord stem cells? And I hope no one thinks I'm implying that a PR apology excuses any kind of Parkinson'e disease cruelty. it's just a discussion point - a matter of fact, nothing more [xx(] And FFS Blir, you of all people should be able to tell the difference between an open-ended question and a political statement [:(!]
It all boils down to wether you believe that life begins at conception or not, in that context it is an abortion issue.

I understand that they're using embryos that were fertilized in vitro - from couples who can't have kids by regular means. These are embryos that the couples no longer want. In other words they will be discarded anyways. Is throwing them out better than using them for stem cells or other research?
If someone believes that life begins at conception then it's an abortion issue no matter how you look at it.
Personally, when it comes to research & science, politicians & their advisors are the last people I would listen to.

Maybe I'm just too sensitive to the destruction of embryos because my kids started out that way. Hell, I started out that way. And just because the GOP does'nt fund embryonic stem cell reesearch does'nt mean that it can't happen in the private sector. But yeah Wolver, when it comes to research & science, politicians & their advisors are the last people I would listen to also. I'm hardly an expert on anything medical, scientific or political but here's an enlightening article I found with lots of informative links:

With adult stem cell research being researched in so many other countries, I wonder if it's become a divisive political tool abroad as well.

Gotta run to work right now so I don't have time to do a search for the text but RL's apology was the classic celebrity/politician "I apologize IF I did anything wrong/hurt your feelings," i.e., I still think I didn't do anything wrong or care that I committed the action that hurt your feelings. (I see a lot of those.)
Even Mel's apology was better (though I still don't believe him either).

MJF has entered into the politcal arena...where everything is fair game. (sad fact, but true) He's admitted earlier to purposely not taking his meds for effect, so Limbaugh was really building on a known fact. I'm a fan of neither, so I couldn't care less about either party.
Stating one's views forcefully, while at the same time deriding the opposing view is the norm in politics today. I'm surprised these things still get the reaction they do.

Marv, that article seems pretty biased to me. Actually, the whole site seems to have an air of intolerance to it - "Dirty arabs?" "whining liberals?" and ad for Pat Boone's latest? [;)]
I'm really not a fan of conservative news though & I didn't spend a lot of time looking through the articles.
I suspect some other countries do not have the political drama that we do around stem cells. Some nations are pretty good about keeping religion & politics seperate & very good about supporting science & public health.
On the other hand, I'm sure there are many countries who won't even approach the topic.

Being exposed to extremist opinion can indeed be difficult. But in order to come to (hopefully) a moderate opinion, I have to understand all sides. Regardless of the thrust of this article, it does provide facts and links of pertinence:
- The only limits in question are on federal funding of new embryonic stem cell lines, requiring the sacrifice of new embryos.
- Private and state-funded research is ongoing.
- There are currently 72 therapies showing human benefits using adult stem cells and zero using embryonic stem cells.
http://stemcellresearch.org/facts/treatments.htm
This medical journal article seems pretty devoid of any partisan thrust:

My father has Parkinson's. Given the chance, I would hold Limbaugh down and tear his eyes and tongue out with my bare hands for the way he mocked the physical symptoms. The heartless piece of crap. If you saw Fox's interview on CBS, he dispels any rumors that he didn't take his medicine, that in fact the tremors were caused by the medicine itself.
Medicating Parkinson's is extremely tricky. It has taken the physicians over 6 years to finally find a correct combination of drugs and dosage for my father. In the past, my father suffered every time they changed his medicine. Now that he's on the "correct" meds, his only symptoms are occasional strong and violent tremors that he has zero control over. When this happens, it takes both my brother and I to hold him down so he doesn't hurt himself. I weigh about 225 lbs. and my bro is about 200 lbs. and he can still fling us around the room when the tremors hit.
The rest of the world is racing past the USA on the stem cell research issue because they don't have this silly attachment to the abortion argument. In the last two years, we have lost our two best stem cell research scientists (one from Stanford, one from UCSF) to the British because we are becoming a backwards country that goosesteps to the whim of the religious right. It is time to take the country back from the superstitious and at least try and move forward scientifically.
I'm going to do a bit of research and find an article from last year about one of the leading opponents of stem cell research and how he traveled to China to have stem cell injections because of his paralysis. It really helps highlight what massive hypocrites these scumbags are.

Honestly, I don't know a lot about stem cells - but this helps;

Marv - "Do no harm" looks like a right to life organization to me. I feel that organizations like that manipulate data and research to fit their agenda.
It seems awfully difficult to find anything unbiased on one side or the other... Although articles in medical journals are a good source, I have to wonder if any of the findings have been replicated yet, and who funded the research. Unfortunatly, that's information we rarely hear about.
