It varies state by state. On the west coast, registration by party is anathema; in other parts of the country, registry by party is simply a tradition. You can still vote for the other party in the general election but depending on the state law party registry most likely limits for whom you can vote in the primary election, where the candidates for the general are selected.

Until recently, voters in Washington and California could vote in a "blanket" primary, where, say, I could vote for the Republican in the primary for Congress and the Democrat in the primary for the state legislature. The US Supreme Court recently tossed out blanket primaries, ruling (to oversimplify it a bit) that the parties have a right to ensure that only each party's own members have a say in selecting that party's nominee for the general election.

Washington has tried a couple of times to restore something closer to a blanket primary, for example, something like the "Cajun Primary," where the top two vote-getters move on to the general regardless of party, but the parties keep suing--the most recent claim: allowing a candidate to put a party name on the ballot as a "description" violates the parties' associational rights to control use of their names.

Under current law, WA voters have to choose a party primary ballot--there's no record or registration kept of which party you choose--and we are still close to revolution at the idea. I cannot imagine having to register as a party member--to me, that's very private.

You don't have to register to a party. But if you don't you cannot vote in the primary elections. Such as, who will be the Rupublican candidate for president.
At least that is how it is here in N.Y.
And if you are registered to a party, you get tons of crap mail this time of year. What a waste of money and paper![}:)]

I've heard it said that the outspoken, dogmatic views one may have are directly proportionate to the amount of skeletons in their closet. So the louder the shit you spout, the greater the chance that your closet will bust open. We've seen it all before. This kind of thing is little more than entertainment to me. It's a sad shame that their dogma could'nt be proportionate to their humility. Oh, well.
