The Red Sox look like they will actually unload Manny this year. My question is this--Is it a smart decision to get rid of him? I'm asking as a baseball fan--not the Red Sox fan that I am.

Manny is a pain in the ass cry baby that has temper tantrums. He is also the reason that Big Papi gets pitched to at all. I dont see any other hitter out there that can compare to a Martinez/Ortiz one two punch. Sorry Drew--your no Manny at the plate. As much as he annoys me, I think the smart choice is to keep him, at least through one more season.

Anyone else? Remember--answer as a baseball fan, not a Red Sox lover or hater.

Would love to see him out here wearing an Angels jersey. He and Vlad would be AWESOME!!!

I'm torn, for all his nonsense, you know at the end of the year he's going to give you 40 HRs and 130 RBIs. But, his teammates must be getting tired of the "Manny being Manny" bullshit, and if it's true that he was actually able to play the few weeks of the season but chose not to, it may finally be enough to damage his relationship with teammates beyond repair.

I'm certainly not sold on JD Drew, but if he remains healthy (a big if, I know), he's a decent bat. And if Theo can pry Jake Peavy and others from San Diego for Manny, I would be pretty excited about a starting rotation of Schilling, Beckett, Peavy, Papelbon, Wakefield, and that's not even including the possibility of Mr. Japan.

Ultimately, who knows, it seems like every move the Sox have made since winning the Series has backfired in some way. Beckett may still be great, but Hanley Ramirez and Anibal Sanchez sure would look good in Boston uniforms next year. I hope 2004 didn't use up all the good decisions Theo is allowed from the baseball gods.

Why can't good guys like Trot Nixon have Manny's talent?

A major problem is that teams keep signing players to back-loaded deals. The following chart shows his future age and salary:

2007 35 $18M
2008 36 $20M
2009 37 $20M (if team exercises its option)
2010 38 $20M (ditto)

If he is traded, he gets a $1M bonus, and probably will probably be able to insist that at least the 2009 option gets guaranteed. If Boston wants to trade him, now is the time to do it. I don't think anyone will want him next year, when his salary would jump up by $3M (including the trade bonus).

I think Boston should keep him, and wave goodbye in 2009. However, if someone makes an outstanding offer, they should take it. You've got to expect Ramirez's production to start falling. He walks a ton, so he won't be useless if he only hits 20 HRs. He just won't be worth $20M in 2009 or 10. And I have my doubts about 2008.

I'm an NL fan, so I have no pro- or anti-Boston bias.

I think Boston should hold on to Manny, then let him walk in 2009.

I may be stating the obvious here, but as an SF Giants fan I cannot resist: Having a $20 Million player who is over the hill, physically incapable of doing his job, and a well-deserved source of massive controversy is a total drag, both to the team and the fans (though unbelievably there are fans around here who still don't want to admit this).

I'd only trade him if I could use the money not spent on him to land a number one starting pitcher. For all his goofiness he is a hall of fame caliber bat that won't be easily replaced.
