Do you send Christmas letters?

The author makes some very funny points.

I receive several of these every year, never would write one myself (I feel lucky just to get a signed card out on time!)

Anyone send these (that's willing to admit it)?

NEVER! [:(!]

My wife suggested that we send out an update this year. I steadfastly refused, threatening divorce! It's always the same culprits year-in and year-out who send these things. They are so punishingly, excrutiatingly, and insufferably distasteful that I seriously think that I'm less to many of these people specifically because of these letter. We have one couple who sends out 2 sheets, front and back...4 pages?!!! During this time of the year? I barely have time to take a crap (something I can do AND post on the NWO at the same time BTW).

Ahhh, the beloved Christmas letter....first off, if I was truly your friend, you wouldn't need to send me a letter, you would have already e-mailed me!![:o)]

I get two of these every year and can't wait for them to come. They are the subject of much ridicule and fun for the whole family!!!

we don't send a letter out, it would be a Christmas miracle if we sent out Christmas cards...

I would never send one, but we get one every year from the same geeks...oops I mean friends. Guess what? I don't care how they are doing or why would they assume anyone cares.

I highly doubt the courtesy cards I send to people that I have long lost touch with could really care about my latest exploits...which include a big fat "not much."

I don't really mind getting a letter, but I can live without them.

oh, I don't mind getting a letter. It's news of which I might not otherwise hear (since I only hear from them once a year, right?[;)])
I don't send such a letter out myself, b/c I barely get around to signing a card with a line or two of news anyway. I handmake my cards (cool handmade paper and all that...) so that's what they're going to enjoy.

My wife wanted to do it but I fought it off by reminding her how I literally roll on the floor in laughter whenever we receive the annual Christmas letter from the Chartwells. They're our "friends" who retired at age 33 after successful investment banking careers. They have a multi-million dollar house with panoramic views of the city, and the three most talented and gifted children in the universe. They have the most perfect lives, it seems, except everyone in town knows Mr. Chartwell is shagging the live-in nanny!

Occasionally I send a Christmas letter, mostly because it's a quick way to update far-flung family and friends (say that five times really fast...) that I don't talk to very often on my goings on for the past year. But I try not to fill it with shameless bragging or my political agenda.

My cousin, on the other hand, sends a Christmas letter that reads like a Jehovah's Witness flyer. She and her husband are extremely conservative fundamentalist Christians (he's even a local politician) and take every opportunity to spread their message. Their Christmas letter is peppered with bible verses, blatant political dogma, and hate speech. It's sickening. And if that wasn't enough, they also brag about how mensa-smart their four home-schooled brats are. Smart, yes, but extremely lacking in social skills because they never associate with normal kids.

Every time I get this Christmas letter my blood boils, for about five minutes until I throw it in the trash. The nerve of some people to think that such extremely opiniated propaganda is appropriate as their general purpose holiday greeting.

Every year, when the annual Christmas letter comes in from my cousin, I threaten to make one up myself to send to her.

Her letter is full of fascinating things like how her youngest brat was potty trained at 10 months and brat #2 won Little Miss Cheese Ball at the county fair, and she and her Mr. are blissfully happy after 900 years of marriage, blah, blah, blah. It's all so damned cheery and irritating. And it's UGLY with little clip art snowflakes and crap all over it.

It's incredible immaturity on my part, but I just want to counter her Christmas letter with the anti-letter.

I want to send one to her and tell her how my oldest kid got straight Ds on his report card. ("Tortured genius!") How we celebrated my birthday by going out and destroying margaritas by the yard ("When BMG finished her second one, she staggered into Mr. BMG and crowed, 'I've had more alcohol than I am tall!' She doesn't remember anything after that. It was *such* fun!") I might tell her how our middle child spends all her time filling boxes with little paper people and cities she's painted ("She's definitely the future Van Gogh!") and how the youngest won't wear clothes. ("For Christmas, we're getting her a pole sized appropriately for a 6-year-old. Sterling silver!")

I'm sure the sarcasm would be lost on her, though, so I make up a letter on the computer and read it to the kids and we all laugh our asses off. We have a good laugh and I won't get a call from her mother wanting to know just what we're up to out here. Plus, I just don't have the nerve to send it.

Yet.
