Gotta ask since I see reports on this every year. The "Experts" always say to tip your garbagemen.

Are they friggin joking? Tip the assholes that toss my garbage cans either halfway down the street, or, block my driveway with my cans so I have to get out of my car and move the cans so I can GET IN the driveway?

My tip is--Put the can back where you found it!!!!!!!!

The only way I would tip is if he is knowingly taking things away that are not supposed to be. In my case bagged leaves or grass clippings, they charge extra if you want them hauled away.

I would not tip my garbage men - they're county employees and make quite a bit more than I do. I can see it if you're in a rural area where some guy hauls neighbors trash for them...

I know I'm supposed to tip the mailman, paperguy and any multitude of people for the holidays, but I don't.

I tip haircutters & waitresses pretty high throughout the year because I know they make crap for money.

randy, I am so glad you brought this up. My Sunday paper included a very nice holiday card wishing me the happiest of holidays and inside was a self addressed envelope, apparently for sending him his Christmas Bonus for all the hard work of driving around my neighborhood (in his car) and dropping off my newspaper! 60% of the time he makes the sidewalk and the other 40% he makes the street. Are you kidding me???? I was 12 years old driving my bike in the dark, throwing newspapers with pinpoint accuracy that would make Derek Jeters throws to first seem weak, all the way to the front door step. Now, when I wake up in the morning, I have to walk what seems like 1/2 a block down the street in my boxers to get the paper.
You want a tip? Start lobbing a few in my driveway or better yet put it at my front door. Othwerwise, all you get is a Polaroid picture of me in front of my house with a newspaper covering my privates and my neighbors closing their blinds.

Yeah, that *MAY* be true (I've seen you throw) but he's nailing the Vicky's Secret Models and you're not. [:o)]

yes, but I was only making $12 per week. If I were making HIS money I'm quite sure I could score at least a Sears Catalog model.

Imagine the look on the guy's face if he opened up his self-addressed envelope and found a note stating the above. That would be priceless.

Actually, a note saying "My accuracy putting the $100 bill in here is about the same as yours."

In theory, I agree that we should tip people who provide a service to us throughout the year. But what galls me about the tipping guidelines is the sense of entitlement and the assumption that people can afford it. This year I can hardly afford gifts for my own family, let alone my hairdresser, mail carrier, or garbage collector. I'm certainly not going to give $50 to a virtual stranger when my own family is getting something from the dollar store [:o)]. Besides, I tip my hair stylist and waitstaff very well all year long.

I get what you guys are saying, but I don't agree. If a guy does a bad job, no way tip him. I don't tip the mail man or garbage man because they make more than me, and they switch people all the time. Now maybe its the Brooklyn in me, but "greasing palms" is a way of life here. I always over tip and at christmas...I grease palms. I take care of everyone that makes my life easier. I tip the crossing guard who crosses my kids first and always is great to us, I tip the ups guy, I tip all the people that look the other way while I do my job. I always get treated better and I love it. Picture the guy in goodfellas. It works.

I've heard it all now! [:D]In England we only tip at restaurants really which makes sense because I know they don't make much money in those jobs.

Watch goodfellas. You tip, and you don't wait on line, you get the best table, you get special treatment. Works for me. I park in a no parking zone every day of the year. Everyone else gets towed. I don't. Security gets a bottle and a few bucks and everyone is happy.

Philly are you sure it's just the tipping or is it that you & your goons have a tendency to encase people's feet in cement & toss them off the pier?

Well....it's a balance between the two. Treat them nice, but have them respect and fear you.
