Ok, I'm sick and have a question. How long does Amoxicillan stay good in the fridge? Does it go bad, or turn to something else, or just get weaker? I have some in my house about 8 months old but I really need it.

If you mean liquid suspension amoxicillin--usually given to kids. It only stays good even in the fridge for about 14 days. Liquid amox (as most liquid forms of antibiotics) degrades pretty rapidly. It doesn't turn into anything harmful (like expired tetracycline does), but at 8 months, probably doesn't have enough of the drug in the suspension to do any good. Don't know your symptoms (I would assume upper respiratory) or your medical history Phil, but if the symtpoms are of the URI variety and it's been less than 7 days of symptoms the cause is almost always viral not bacterial and amoxicillin would not be helpful anyways. Sorry I don't have better news--I hope you feel better soon[:)]

Moreover, you don't use an antibiotic for a couple of days, and then stop when you feel better. (Even a pill like Zithromax.) Doing so helps produce antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which is bad news all around.

Its weird, I had a slight cold about a week ago and have been ok with it, then all of a sudden I wake up sunday to a very bad headache and sore throat. My head has been killing me all day and my body aches. I had the flu shot about 2 months ago so I dont think its that. I just fall apart when I'm sick because I think I'm going to get something worse. I guess I'll live. Thanks for the warning, I guess I can toss that stuff.

I blame the kids! It has been pass the germs for the past month.

Sounds like strep throat. Have you checked the back of your throat for white spots?

Oh great, there are a few spots. But it is not very painful. We shall see.

Hi phil! Hope you're feeling better. If the Amoxicillin in your fridge is in suspension form(liquid), then it's not for you. Amoxicillin suspension is only given to children by dose or by empirical. For adults, I give Amoxicillin tablets depending upon the patient illness. If it's viral in origin then Amoxicillin is of no use since it's specific only for bacterial infections. Even though, it's 8 months old as long it's not yet expired then the meds can be used. But, if the suspension is already 8 months open then the potency reduces. Hope that help.

You guys are a big help. But I am going to see the doctor tomorrow. My throat is really starting to hurt alot. And the headache is pretty bad too. With any luck I'll be feeling better by the weekend. Thanks for the help. GERMS SUCK! The worst about being sick is the light headed feeling you get. Your sense of time is off, your in a cloud, it sucks.

OK, so when do you need anti biotics? To be honest, I never used them till I was 18 years old.
