M for Marv (or Marvelous)

Ok, that sounds a bit, creepy, but...

Seriously, Marv has been the most visible member of the Mods here over the last several days. As such he has been subject to a variety of derisive comments on the board. I have been reminded again of the kind of "no-win" job the mod has. That being said it is past time for me to publicly support him and his stance on several of the threads posted here in the last week or so. Still being a relative newcomer here has robbed me of the benefit of knowing a lot of the old history here. But, suffice it to say that harrassment and continued perjorative attacks against members are not (nor should be) tolerated here at the NWO. The atomosphere on the NNNW board has become quite toxic--enough so my fear is some very new posters may be shy about posting lest they are targeted for abuse. That should not happen. Certainly disagreements and jabs back and forth are going to happen on a public board with a membership this size. But things have gotten out of hand in several recent instances. Marv (and certainly MikeP--it's his board after all) were right to put a stop to them before they deteriorated any further. New Year's are a traditional time for making resolutions (and then promptly forgeting them). Perhaps as Ben has done in his holiday-themed thread (good show, Ben)it's time for us as a group to recognize that the New Wave Outpost, is, as much as anything on the Internet, a dynamic organism--one whose ability to thrive is directly shaped by the membership. Engendering an atomosphere that deters people from posting will result in eventual stagnation of a wonderful site. My hope is that none of us here are willing for that to happen. That means thinking before posting. Some examples include: 1-Should a personal grudge against a board member be better brought up to him/her off-board? 2-Will a savage reply to a jab really result in anything except an escalation in an argument that, in most cases, neither side can possibly "win"? 3-Do I have to have the last word on a subject, or perhaps by NOT answering a baiting thread, I take the high road and it is NOT perceived as "losing" the argument?

More specifically recently:
Rubeet, you have always been kind to me in your posts, and as I understand, you have always been a valued member of this board (long before some dolt name NuWaveRx made a great impression on everyone by fucking up Blir's NTT game...[:I]). I don't know the past history you have described in recent posts and it is none of my business. Something this personal shouldn't be aired here. It is akin to a couple having a loud argument in a crowded diner--it is acutely embarrasing for all.
Eight6 (deep breath). I have nothing but respect for you. Your ability to think on your feet, your humor, and your mastery of sarcasm as a sharp instrument is nothing short of spellbinding. My guess is you could give the great orators of the 18th and 19th century a run for their money. But, that sharp instrument has been wielded a bit much in recent threads (IMHO). As stated above it can create the perception to very new members that if they are out of line they will torn to shreads by a master. I fear that many people may not reply to your posts for that reason. I confess I'm a bit nervous as I write this[:p]. But I ask that you use your obvious wit and intelligence with a bit more brevity. I don't believe you want to scare people away from NWO. I now await the dagger as it comes...[:D]

This post is mine and did not go through the "committee" of the other mods. If any of you choose to heap abuse--please direct it at me--and please email me if possible. You'll hit your target--I check it at least daily.

Finally to all the members of the NWO--A very happy holiday season. May your New Year be as exciting (but much safer) than James Bond--after all next year is the Year of the Bond ('007)

Thanks for reading.[:)]

If you want a dagger, you're just going to have to wait until one of the ones I've recently dispensed are returned to me.

Of course I'm not trying to chase people away. I will however admit to a profound weakness for open ended remarks meant to provoke a response.

Don't feed the monster.

Ahem.

What I'm about to say may get my invitation to the super secret squirrel bully club revoked, but oh well.

I've been guilty of "bullying" (or whatever you choose to call it) from time to time on this site. I never intended to come off so damn harsh, but by now y'all know that I sometimes have a short fuse. But I at least try to make things right when I lay on the venom, justified or not. Having said that, I don't see too many folks here willing to step back, apologize, accept an apology, or just agree to disagree without any hard feelings. It makes this lil' message board a nasty place to navigate through at times. And the nastyness is contagious, there is no use in pretending otherwise. I hate any kind of politically correct behavior, but it sure as hell wouldn't hurt this site for folks to put their damn egos on the shelf and try to remember why they came to this site in the first place. I'm assuming it was for the same reason I did, to trade info about a style of music that we have been blessed with the good sense to appreciate. Everything else on this site (no offense intended) is bullshit. It's high school bullshit. And I'm damn sick of it. I'm sick of folks like Universal Radio, Mare Idol, toe_jam_on_toast and so many others stepping away from this site because some folks just can't back the fuck off, justified in their opinions or not. I'm sick of hearing about our younger members here feeling that they're not wanted on this site. I'm sick of the "if you weren't there, you would'nt understand" attitude about the music. Is it your intention to take this music with you to the grave? Are you gonna put it in a vault, only to bring it out when you want to recapture a piece of your youth? Share your knowledge and love for this music with the younger members, dammit. I program the playlists for each of my stores, and a big chunk of it is comprised of new wave music. I get more folks in their early twenties talking about it than any other group, and I try to do what I can in my little corner of the woods to spread the info and love of this music. But I don't give the address to this site out anymore, and that's mostly due to the negative impressions several of you put out. You don't own this music, and if you keep treating it like you do, you're gonna fuck up it's chances of ever living on past a few oddballs and music freaks. And that attitude also opens the doors for a new wave site run by a degenerate troll to catch on. Do you want THAT joker to be the guy that lays down the info and love of the new wave genre? Is that the ambassador you want out there?

Rip into this post if thats your thing. I ain't gonna say a damn thing in rebutal. I'd rather spend my valuable time and efforts turning on new folks to this music than deal with this goofy-ass completely unneccessary drama.

And to the grammar cops, I am so sorry that I didn't spell check this post. I'm sure motors can handle that lil' detail for me.

Oh yeah...Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Killer Kwanzaa and Happy Festivus.

Thanks for this, NuWaveRx! Well-appreciated.

As I keep saying, as long as nobody stirs shit, I'm sure we'll all be getting along just fine.

Marv, I really hope you can always try to exercise impartial mod judgments around here. It's been an ongoing issue for a while.

I absolutely share Hutter's sentiment over this whole antagonism thing.

Marv lost all credibility as a Moderator when he began engaging in the kind of behavior Mods are supposed to circumvent- intolerance of other viewpoints, personal attacks, verbal abuse, profane name calling and general curmudgeonly crochetyness. Plus I'm pretty sure he farts in church too.

The reason Marv took this "no win" job is because it allows him to throw his authoritarian weight around, which is something he enjoys immensely. That's his benefit. And it comes at the loss of any expectation of integrity or unbiased fairness on his part.

I do appreciate the fact that the other Mods do not behave this way. But to expect that regular NWO posters demonstrate appropriately civil behavior when at least one who governs the Board sets examples to the contrary, is not realistic.

Posters old and new would be less reticent about posting here were they to feel not only that they wouldn't be targeted for abuse but that those in charge could be relied on to give them a fair shake should a controversy arise. Right now, that's not the case.

As you can see Nuwave, your words are wasted because the guilty party in all of this still thinks they are a victim. cuckoo cuckoo! They don't realize what they are doing. I agree Marv needs a round of drinks for all he had done here. All the mods do.

Wow, quite the piece coming from a guy who once posted that he was going for a dump, "so don't nobody post nuthin' in my absence". You're just too full of yourself, and you don't carry off the father figure convincingly at all so give it up.

Just my opinion of course.

I guess we all are who we are, and we either accept that or we don't...

Anybody else having deja vu?

*edit* I will add one more thing. There seems to be a concensus that Marv has given me too much leeway. That is not the case, he has asked me a quite a few times to resist the urge to speak my mind: he can be held no more responsible for me than he can for the trolls who frequent the site.

That being said, I'll also add that if my postings have been so out of line, why have I never received an e-mail from any other current mod? Seems at least Marv has the stones to tell me to shut up. Maybe people should get off his back with this bias crap.

I read that the last time everyone had a blast! I am really no where all the time....all over the place really. I am originally from Washington State. I tour a lot. maybe if you set something up I may be in the area. Are you from Philly or NYC?

Is this site for older people? I love 80s my older sister michelle (she posts under another name here...shhhhhhh) got me into it. I am 25. huter said younger people are not welcome?

NuWave throws out some words that attempted to give things here a fresh start, and the trolls piss on it. Big surprise. I eat crow and fess up to my very obvious faults and get accused of trying to be Ward Cleaver. Big surprise.

Andy, or whatever name you're answering to this week...go piss on some other site. Maybe your own?

To whomever it concerns...what the fuck is the deal with all the Marv hate? If he had to play bad cop, its only because some of y'all push and push and push. I know Marv well enough to know that ego-stroking had nothing to do with why he accepted MikeP's invite. And what the hell is powerlust on a fucking message board? Care to explain that to me, DJCraig? I don't understand the concept, it seems to be something that only the petty would be drawn to, and I seriously doubt Marv falls into that category.

eight6...are you so dead and determined to always be in the right, no matter who it affects? Have you ever considered walking away from a fight that, by your own admission, you are overqualified for?

Rubbeet...try to learn from my mistakes. Sometimes its best to let things drop and bite your tongue. It helps if you learn to love the taste of your own blood. I still haven't aquired a taste for it, but maybe you'll have better luck than moi.

Now excuse me, I gotta go take a dump...don't put up any posts 'til I get back.

I keep starting to reply to this post and then run back to the kitchen (still candying that orange peel). I've been a bit hesitant to reply because I don't think this is what NuWaveRx intended when he started the thread.

With a 2.5 year tenure, I've been around here a reasonably long time, and I lurk more than I post. I, too, am dismayed by (and bored with) the lack of civility around here. I simply don't understand why every disagreement has to descend into snipefests full of personal attacks and namecalling. But a lack of civility in that sense is not the only decline I've observed around here.

See, I just complained about a lack of civility. But here's the thing: I may not agree with the words Eight6 (for example) uses, or the way he won't let something go when it's time to drop it and move on, but almost all the time I agree with the sentiments at the core of his posts. This is because there are a lot of crap-ass posts around here. If someone makes a completely ridiculous statement on a public forum, no one, least of all the poster, should be surprised when someone takes a poke at that overinflated balloon.

"Civility" does not mean everyone agrees. Civility includes respectful dissent. Civility also requires that a poster who finds him or herself criticized takes a closer look at his/her posts to see whether the posts are making a helpful contribution to the dialogue. I'm not saying that every post has to be genius or even meaningful. I love a stupid poll or scatological/pervy thread just as much as the next person. But IMHO posters need to take a second look at the quality of the response before hitting the button.

This gets me to: Hutter, I think you're picking the wrong people to defend. (I'm not necessarily referring to the individuals you named in your post; in particular, I enjoyed Mare right up until she seriously insisted that her pee didn't stink and then hurled insults at those who questioned her statement.) IMHO our younger members are responsible for a disproportionate amount of crappy posts and a lot of the perceived "decline" around here. (Yes, I know that 40 somethings make crappy posts too, and I know that some our younger members have grown out of the worst of it. I'm speaking generally.)

I don't want to read a teenager's drunken/drugged ramblings or pathetic attention whoring. (Anorexic? I don't care. Who's not anorexic at 19? Go to the Mary Kate and Ashley board.) If criticism of those kind of posts makes the kids feel unwelcome, too bad. Frankly, I'm not interested in discussing NW with anyone under 30, and on that point Hutter and I will have to disagree. But it's not my site, and I can't ban them. If the kids don't feel welcome, maybe they should take a closer look at their posts with an eye to whether their comments are likely to earn them respect.

Anyway, notwithstanding any disagreements, a warm Yule log to you all,

--Hex
