How do you iPod?

Postby Spaz » Tue Dec 26, 2006 1:34 pm

I know, I know....too much iPod talk for this board, but since many of you possibly recieved them for Christmas, you may want to share and learn what other folks do to collect their music....

Me?

Well, I do it entirely different to anyone I personally know. I am a big fan of albums, but each album by an artist may have a song or two I don't care about so I will only load the songs I really want to hear into myPod.

Example: Squeeze's East Side Story is one of my fave albums of all-time but for over 25 years, I've never really cared for the song 'Heaven'. In fact, I don't think I'd ever want to hear it again so I don't load it into myPod. And since I am not loading the complete album, I enter all songs under an album title called iSqueeze. This is the same thing I do for all Squeeze albums. All songs by that group are loaded into an 'album' called iSqueeze. So, Squeeze have only one album in myPod called iSqueeze but that one album contains every Squeeze track I'd ever want to listen to.

Same with iMentals (all Mental As Anything tracks), iRobertPalmer, iOMD, etc.

People think I'm crazy, but I don't think so. Just different.

How do you load them into yourPod?

I load similarly to you...favorites but liberally. I eliminate things I'll never like but load marginal things I may enjoy if they happen to pop up. But I don't do the band thing because that feature is already built-in under the Bands list basically. Same with albums, which show up under Artist listings.

I load by broad category like, um, New Wave, heh. There's also stuff like Alt 90s, Alt 00s, Classical, Electrolounge, R&B Classics, Rock Legends, Jazz, Folk, etc.

Some of these require subcategories like Forgotten KROQ [;)], New Wave Selects, Fav Alt of the 00s, etc for when I really want to listen to my very favorites.

There will be very few artist folders that I want to easily access from the huge mish-mosh: British Sea Power, New Order, Joy Division, and Goldfrapp are the only ones currently.

Then there's temp folders either for specific things in their entirety, to fit my mood, or for purpose-built reasons: Bade Runner Definitive Edition, SXSW Showcase Selects, Punk/PostPunk Diary (interviews), Dinner Party, Light Pop, Kinda Dark, Foreign Electro, Cure Remasters, etc.

I only load playlists - "New Wave" "Disco," etc. which include just songs I like - mostly hits, some obscurities. I've got 30 gigs so I have to be conservative. (I never thought I'd ever consider 30 gigs to be small!)

Whether it's my ipod or hard drive, I never load on the album tracks I don't like. There's no point in it for me. I pick out the favorites or mid-level favorites & take the effort to digitize them. The rest can stay on cd. When recording vinyl though I sometimes put mediocre tracks on my computer. If it's something I hate though - fugeddaboutit

Before I upgraded I had to be pretty picky but now I like having the option to load more of the album stuff. If I know I really don't like a song, I won't even put it on the hard drive, but I find a lot of things grow on me after a few listens.

I'm big on playlists. I have dozens of them on iTunes. I just have it set to automatically load to all my iPods and keep them updated, which have different lists allocated to them. The lists are also accessible by various laptops I have around the house again, through iTunes. Of course I can access my entire music database through the laptops also.
