Just another cautionary tale for you music hounds...

I'm pretty manic with my backups, and in the middle of doing one for my primary 250g music disk to a secondary 250g, that secondary one crashed...hard...and irrevocably. Piece of shit! I've been noticing it was getting sketchy, sometimes taking a couple of attempts to do the backup the last few times. Now it's completely shit the bed.

I figured those cheapo drives on sale would be fine for backups, but I'm not going there anymore. No more Western Digitals, no Fantom Drives, no IOGears or anything else but LACIE! Knock on wood, these LaCie's have never crapped out on me or my business partner through probably a dozen different drives and terabytes of filing, video projects, serving, whatever. They come at a bit of a premium, but for good reason apparently.

Yeah, really. I've only had one drive die, and it was a second hand notebook one. Actually, it still kind of works. I think it's only one part of the drive that is messed up, so I may be able to salvage the first XX GB if I partition it.

crap! that sucks! Lacie has always been good us, too, btw.

Just on side note, I highly recommend Lacie CRTs as well. Really crisp and comfortable on the eyes.

Well to clarify, this is the only one that's physically failed on me...dead as a doornail. My previous disaster was a corruption and possible human error while monkeying around with unix scripts (stupid, stupid!).

OOOHhhh, I see. Oh jeez, that's sucks.

Believe me, monkeying around with unix script sounds nothing compared to what I did. Not too long ago, I accidentally f-cked around with single System Font (go ahead and laugh). Needless to say, it wouldn't fully reboot and we had to perform all sorts of hard drive gymnastics.

You know, unix is all fun and games until someone erases a HD.

Hey, Drive-Man-Blir.....can you recommend a good drive I can rip some 500 DVDs to? I'm gonna need two - one as a back up.

Jesus Marv, I don't even think you're asking the right question. The bigger question is why the hell you'd want to rip 500 DVDs?! That'd be over 2 terabytes in full quality; 500gigs even if you compressed it 1:4. I suppose any old drive will if it's just for archival. If you're going to edit at all and want more speed, I'd suggest a FW800 or external SATA unit.

With this new video iPod I'm gonna want quick access to all my movies. Plus with the new iTV Apple is slated to release this quarter, I'm gonna have to have all my movies ripped to a hard drive.
