Actually, The Monkees were probably one of the best examples of an early 'boy band' so I'll vote for them.

Yeah, 'cause all the members of all the boy bands were openly gay and all of their fans were gay guys and their music was enormously popular at gay clubs.

The Monkees, yeah. I agree. Probably the best "boy band". Well, probably the only good boy band ever created.

Well, the best single by a boy band is O-zone's "Dragostea Din Tei". [:D]

Well...I kind of have a soft spot for The London Boys. They were a late 80's UK house-pop-dance band. They probably aren't exactly what you're referring to.
What about Musical Youth? "Pass de dutchie to de left hand side..."

Or should I be posting this under the "Guilty Pleasures" topic? [;)]

that Numa Numa song of theirs was a number one hit in like a dozen countries, and it wasn't even in English... not too shabby for a band from Moldova singing in native language
check out the "Send Me an Angel" vibe in Backstreet Boys "Straight Through My Heart" intro, or am I the only one who felt that?

Duran Duran was a boy band if ever there was one. Thank god they seem to have transcended that.

I always thought of a "Boy Band" as a group of guys who just sing and dance.... don't write their music nor play instruments..more of a manufactured band...Backstreet Boys and N'Sync fit that description
but most of the bands mentioned above (Duran Duran etc) are not really boy bands according to that definition...even the O-Zone mentioned above, they wrote their own material...
if you think of Duran Duran as a boy band... what's next? Bon Jovi? U2? Aerosmith? I don't think that fits well

Make no mistake, Duran Duran had their boy band phase. A Boy Band, by my definition, is any group that cares more about pandering to hordes screaming teenage girls than it does about its music.
Thank goodness the Duranies matured beyond this a long time ago and won't be writing any more whiny songs about unions of snakes, new moons on monday or being hungry like wolves.

so if being young, attractive and writing catchy and commercially appealing songs makes it a "boy band"....
in that case I'll go with A-Ha [:D]
