Songs that trigger your memories

I know similar threads like this have existed before but not in a long while here. And this one isn't just to ask about "the most emotive new wave song" or whatnot. Watching a Ridley Scott movie tonight made me think again of songs that instantly take me back to a time and place. But I don't necessarily mean back to a specific or even [i]real[/i] place. I can't describe it very well, but I think I mean that it evokes the [i]feelings[/i] and [i]notions[/i] of a time and place. But even back in that time, the thing being remembered may not have been a specific time or place either but these same said [i]feelings[/i] and [i]notions[/i] of possibly another time or place - sort of memories of having memories or the conjuring of old emotions that might now be disjointed from the original cause of those emotions. Does this make any sense to anybody?!

Okay, back to such songs. The type of songs I'm referring to are not your big emo songs, no matter what I might have inferred above. They're not old relationship songs, or old favorite songs that you might stick on a mix tape, or one you'd even ever put into a top 10 of anything. These songs might be songs you don't even know the titles of and likely thought were completely inconsequential at the time of the first hearing and association. Your consciousness would not even know to seek these songs out. Know what I'm sayin'??

BUT...when you hear them again...POW!

Tonight's song was brought to me by Scott's movie "A Good Year", basically a light romance vehicle for Russell Crowe...AND the very very very very hot Parisian actress Marion Cotillard. The movie mostly takes place on a wine chateau, and frankly it's far more rewarding than the overhyped Sideways imho. Anyway, it's freaking beautifully shot. At the end of a certain tennis scene, I'm thinking to myself "Wow, this looks like a fantasy idyll straight out of an old Chanel No 5 commercial.

At just that very moment, a piece from Claude Debussy's "Two Arabesques", Arabesque #1 to be exact, started playing as the sountrack to the next scene. Holy crap, this is one of many dreamy music pieces that used to appear in those same Chanel commercials back in the late 70s (maybe early 80s). They used to always make me stop and watch because they were so beautifully done and (there's that word again) emotive...of...something. Maybe of some dreamer kid's notions of some nonexistant idyll. Whatever.

Then an instant later, the thunderbolt strikes me that it was Ridley Scott that did all those commercials! Holy fooking crap, this whole flick is basically all his old Chanel commercials done up into a whole movie. The memories ("memories...you're talking about memories" [;)] ) weren't by happenstance at all, because I was watching the work of the original author but emoting his old works...all without quite realizing that at first.

I thought this was very cool...ahem, needless to say given my rambling. Another classic track that he used in those spots was the Ink Spots' "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire". I haven't seen these old commercials in ages but have a huge craving to now.

But, um, any other old weird songs that "take you back"? [:I]


[Man, I just realized that a song from Scott's Blade Runner that didn't make the final soundtrack is also an Ink Spots tune - "If I Didn't Care". I guess he likes to revisit certain themes. Wow.]
