Joy Division On Jack FM

I'm sure many of you know or at least have heard about these stations calling themselves JACK FM "Playing What We Want". Some call it the ipod version of FM radio. They dedicate their playlists to mostly rock of the 70's and 80's with a nice variety. To be honest it's currently the only station worth listening to out here in Los Angeles.

ANYWAY!! A bit earlier on this morning I was listening. And all of a sudden I hear Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart. I was kind of surprised (but happy) to be hear it on that station. It was played right after ELO's Evil Woman and was followed by Cheap Trick's The Flame.

It's funny, I just heard it up in Buffalo NY a couple of weeks ago. I didn't have my iPod car rig with me in this rental, so I was stuck with about 50 channels of backwardass FM SHIT up there. Then this Jack station came on with Love and Rockets. I was like "Whoa". Then they played DMode, and I'm thinking "Holy crap, this is Upstate NY?!"

Buuut...then they played Def Leppard and Journey, and I'm thinking they're totally schizophrenic. The DJ finally came on and did their aircheck saying "You'll never know what you're gonna get...kinda like Willis McGahee" [crappy NFL running back and one of the stupidest draft picks ever]. LOL.

I'd say it's fine for Upstate NY but in any civilied part of the world, I'd still want something better. [:o)]

Jack FM is the only station worth listening to here. I sort of like the schizoid feel of it [:D]

I've heard them play lots of Depeche Mode. And not just people are people and enjoy the silence. I've even heard a few Oingo Boingo tracks. Star 98.7 could probably try to compete with them, but instead they've decided to go almost 100% muzak.

My husband listens to Jack FM in his car. I am pleasantly surprised sometimes with what they play.
But like Blir said, a good song comes on followed by a crappy one.

I had heard the "we play anything" format is one of the fastest growing formats in FM radio. I have heard a couple of different stations with this format, I think the first was BOB FM in Austin.

There's one in my area and I have been surprised by some of the semi-deep (for my area in 2007) NW tracks I've heard. The other day I got Talk Talk's eponymous song, The Fixx's Deeper and Deeper, and The Clash's London Calling all in the space of one hour. Yeah it was interspersed with Def Leopard, OMC (not D), and Kansas, but still was pretty cool.

Likewise. (Seattle's "alternative" station has really gone downhill, too many talk programs when I want to hear music!) I haven't heard Joy Division, but New Order, Bunnymen, lots of Cure. Nothing that's obscure by NWO standards but more than just MTV New Wave. Also, even though they play genres I'm not fond of, they always seem to find the better examples of those genres . . . or maybe I just secretly like Bon Jovi.

Certain radios do have a total schizo way of playing songs. And sometimes to put a new song after a really good one is a really hard task. I've seen a million times that when they put "Stairway to heaven" on... any song they play after it is just poop. Same happens with LWTUA... what do you play after one of the best songs ever?
But if a radio puts on JD, I'd be so celebrating it... here, there's just one radio that plays JD, Echo and the bunnymen and stuff form the 80's that's not so mainstream.

This is the sad state of radio in the LA market...

I use to listen to the local Jack station a few years back, but their playlists seemed pretty limited. They played some cool stuff, but it was the same cool stuff over and over for a month, until they finally decided that it's time to change the playlist.
