I love Mac but use a PC & I hate it.

I guess it's because I learned how to use computers on a Mac way back in '86 or '87. I've always loved them & it broke my heart a few years ago when I had to switch at work & at home.

I love Macs - as if I needed to state this - but I'm really digging the Intel processing. My colleague and I are almost there in being able to convert every corporate application and VPN to a MacBook running Parallels Desktops, the app that takes advantage of Intel's built-in virtualization engine. Once this happens, I dump my ridiculous and kludgy Dell with the Apple sticker on it. My real lust though is for the new Dual Quad Core MacPro - 8 processing cores! [:p]

I put the last one option 8![:p][:D]Just to be you know awkward. Oh please don't' get me started on computers, nightmares the nightmares! My first computer was a 386 with Windows 3.1 which I bought off my brother which amazingly I had for years and although it was really old I managed to get through my Computer Arts diploma using it for my homework. it was actually pretty stable. I had that from 1995 til 2001 Then I bought a new computer and that was where the real problems began, it was Windows 98 one and the thing crashed, crashed,crashed, very temperamental with the internet, printers the works. I decided to change to mac after hearing much good about them being good for design, music etc. I kinda wanted one of those colored imacs when they were out but um too bad I'd bought the computer from hell! Anyhow I bought my imac G5 a couple of years back and although it was strange at first I find the mac os really easy to use and the system to be more stable (once i'd got past the kernel panics and learned how to maintain a mac and the differences. I love the fact it is so small too, another reason for buying as I wanted a computer to fit in well on my desk so more room for my peripherals. I have also bought a G3 notebook which is really nice even though it's old! I have my own little network now too. So yes I have been both but I've been converted to mac now and whilst I don't mind using any computer for my own use that's how I intend to stay! The irony is my friend bought my old computer off me and has had no problems with the windows 98 antique! (but then he doesn't really push the machines like us creative types do!) Macs have come a long way since the slow old-fashioned things we had to use at college!It baffles me why peopel call windows computers a PC when a mac is also a PC as PC stands for personal computer, it's not like macs are mainframes or workstations is it?!

Like you, I have Dell (laptops) for both business and personal applications (Inspiron 8600's) I'm in the market for new ones, and to be honest I have been eyeing the MacBook Pro. Is the MacPro 8 something new, or am I just an Apple lingo dummy???

I just got my first MacBook Pro yesterday. Literally up and running in minutes. I haven't used a Mac since college, but I'm liking it so far. It's for work, but I'm looking at GarageBand to see what I can do with that in my spare time.

Blir, are there any apps your recommend or mac sites?

The MacPros are the towers, and yeah, the dual-quad "Clovertown" Zeon-based ones are new. MacBook Pros and non-Pros are the laptops...[i]only[/i] single Core2 Duos in those, which isn't bad. I'd put one through the paces before jumping in whole hog to make sure they fit your apps.

And Don, the most popular apps are nearly all the same except for the included Apple suites (unbeatable) plus the likes of Final Cut and Logic in either Express or Pro form. The Adobe suites too, now native for Intel with CS3. Lotta cool freebies I use almost every day:

Shakespeer - DC++ hub client
WireTap - online recording tool
Handbrake - best DVD ripper/converter out there, period
MacTheRipper - for those really tough locked DVDs
Flip4Mac - WMV utility for Mac
Audacity - same audio tool ala PC
iSquint - amazingly fast video converter (amazingly)
MPEG Streamclip - another greater converter with a little more editing function
RSyncX - cool mirroring and backup tool
RAR Expander - a RAR expander

Dedicated for-fee apps really depend on what you do. I wouldn't ever be without Toast, Peak, or Reason for example. DiskWarrior is a disk utility that every mac owner should have IMHO. As for sites, plenty...just google the app type you're looking for plus the word "macintosh" and you're likely to be directed to a variety of places, including Apple itself, CNET, VersionTracker, MacWorld, MacAddict, etc, etc.
