Vinyls and Maths and Michael Stipes...

So, I gotta ask. What's with the new-fangled plurals that everyone's using that just didn't seem to exist back when I was learning the English language? I read on this board all the time about the "vinyls" that people have. Seriously, for those of you who grew up in the era of vinyl did you ever ONCE refer to your collection as "vinyls"? Up until about a year ago I had never once seen "vinyl" in that plural form.
And while we're at it - when did "math" suddenly become plural? Is there more than one "math" and if there is - is it really grammatically correct to just add an "s"?
I threw the "Michael Stipes" thing in there just because I so frequently hear people referring to him that way and I just want to smack them.
