Lemmings and other New Yorkers

I just read this on Yahoo news and thought it was interesting for several different reasons:

First of all, as a native NYer, it irritates me when people try to pigeon-hole us (although I'm a hypocrite to say so- I like to slam NJ and the South whenever possible. Damn the stereotypes, damn them! Maybe THEY'RE the root of all evil?) I also get irritated when I say I'm from NY and everyone automatically assumes the city- you know, there is a WHOLE STATE around that city!

Secondly, does it bother anyone reading this article that these candidates are being pigeon-holed as NYers even though they are not all originally from NY?

Thirdly, what do other NYers think about this? In the South the attitude is that even if you have lived here most of your life (actually, even if you were born here but your parents weren't) you are not considered a Southerner. In fact, you are a Yankee no matter where you come from as long as it's not the south. Do NYers claim Clinton, Giuliani, and Bloomberg as their own, or do they consider them to be outsiders?
