What was the deal in the 50's & 60's with all the (mostly doo wop) bands with "Del" in the name? They weren't Spanish sounding like the Del Fuegos either. You had

The Del Lords
The Del Vikings
The Del Fi's (same as the Del Phi's?)
The Del Rays
Dick Dale and His Del Tones

Clearly, many, many rockers were influenced by none other than Del Shannon.

I smell easy corporate tour sponsorship...

I always thought it was a fraternity thing - a shortening of "Delta." Or I thought it might be a telephone exchange when they used to use abbreviations for the first 3 digits...or an abbreviation of a street or part of town - like letting people know where you were from. Seemed like shortening words down was a big part of the language in the '50's.

I don't know...it just made sense to me. I suspect it's just some slang that's lost on us youngins'

A club regular had dreams of becoming a famous wrestler as Mark Shannon. Liking the name Shannon, Westover borrowed the surname and derived Del from his favourite make of car, the Cadillac Coupe DeVille. "DeVille, Del, that's where I got it from," Shannon explained to Dick Clark, "Could you imagine myself walking on stage and being introduced: 'Ladies and gentlemen, Charles Westover!' It had no ammunition."

BTW, Del Lords are an 80's band.
