Luciano Pavarotti (October 12, 1935 – September 6, 2007) was an Italian tenor and one of the most popular contemporary vocal performers in the world of opera and across multiple musical genres. Known for his televised concerts, and as one of the Three Tenors, Pavarotti was also noted for his award-winning charity work for raising money on behalf of refugees and the Red Cross.

Luciano Pavarotti died in the early morning of September 6, 2007 at home in Modena, Italy where he was surrounded by his wife and four daughters. In an email statement, his manager wrote, "The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life. In fitting with the approach that characterized his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness."

I saw his last performance at the Met in New York as the lead tenor in Gaetano Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor" (The Elixir of Love).

Also of note because of the YouTube video shovelbum posted, the very famous "mad scene" aria from the opera was released as a music video by Russian male soprano Vitas in 2006.

And used in the "great"[?] film the "Fifth Element:" 'The "mad scene" aria "Il dolce suono" (from the 3rd Act) was re-popularized when it was featured in the film The Fifth Element in a performance by the alien diva Plavalaguna (voiced by Albanian soprano Inva Mula-Tchako and played onscreen by French actress Maïwenn Le Besco).'

Ok, OK, may he R.I.P. -- one of the greatest tenors to walk the earth... I've read his unauthorized biography, the dude was a giant prima donna (needed to be bitch-slapped)!!! To say the least, he brought tears to my eyes with his voice! I'm sending love his way...
