SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- A federal-court jury on Thursday found a Minnesota woman infringed on copyrighted material by sharing music files over the Internet in the first such case to go to trial.

Jammie Thomas had been sued by six record companies in U.S. District Court in Duluth, Minn., in 2006 for sharing songs by artists such as Destiny's Child and Green Day via the popular online service Kazaa.

A jury on Thursday ordered Thomas to pay $9,250 for each of 24 of those songs, for a total of $222,000, according to court filings.

The companies that sued Thomas include Sony BMG Music Entertainment (SONY:
and Warner Bros. Records (WMG:.

Thomas testified during the trial that she had never had an account with Kazaa, and had not shared the songs in question, according to media reports.

Record companies have filed thousands of lawsuits in recent years over file sharing, which they say has hurt music sales by making content freely available.

That $3,000 settlement offer she refused probably sounds a whole lot better now. The Price of not wanting to be pushed around is quite expensive. Now, please excuse me, I must go delete my Destiny's Child mp3's
