Interesting debate concerning the use of decision theory in determining if action should be taken concerning the Global Warming issue. The part I'm concerned about is not applying degree of probability in determining risk:

This is an issue I've always been on the fence about. At the least this is a civil discourse (with himself, of course) that should generate similar civil debate.

Your thoughts?

Maybe in a hundred years from now they will be decrying how the earth is rapidly cooling. Global cooling will be the new catch phrase when the cycle changes. It amazes me that with the earth being around for millions of years they can take such a miniscule sample of data and conclude the world as we know it is comming to an end.

Didn't you hear? Fox news reports greenhouse gases and pollution is actually good for the earth. [:p]

The Goreoids have certainly cheapened whatever valid content "the message" contains. As well, they do an equally good job of applying ignorance to opposing scientific findings.

The worst thing they do to their cause is present it in an obnoxious or condescending manner, using it as an opportunity to take cheap shots at political or lifestyle opponents. What should be an inclusive discussion usually becomes a petty insult match. Pretty idiotic considering you're only alienating your team mates...yes, every human being is on the same end of the environment stick and nature won't pick and choose who to be kind to. I almost have to ask myself if some of the more outspoken proponents of GW theory are only so just to be vindictive towards others.

But anyway, in the spirit of NuWave's call for civility, I too have been on the fence at least about certain scientific evidence. It seems that for every one study that happens, there's another that contradicts it. In spite of that, I do my own best to be as environmentally friendly as I can. For example, I car pool, walk or use public transportation when I can, recycle always, use minimal electricity and reuse or repurpose when I can. I compost and stay away from harsh chemicals on my lawn, do lots of planting including trees and buy local produce. But I know that all this is pretty tiny compared to what else is going on in the world. I work in a retail industry and knowing how very much product is produced in the Far East for example, the factory refuse can only be staggering especially where standards are hardly analyzed as they are here.
