I am enjoying a good day at work. I am at the reception area of one of my customers. I am talking with the receptionist and get on the topic of movies and what we are planning to see next. I say hey that movie "Control" has been released and I am planning to see it. The blank look on her face was enough for me to add "you know the movie about Ian Curtis". The further blank stare and shrug of the shoulders should have been enough for me to just leave it at that. But noooooo, I have to add to the conversation "you know movie about the lead singer from Joy Division?". Again blinking eyes, blank stare and shrugged shoulders.

Ahhhh, but I am not deterred. I figure I will work backwards with a little musical history lesson. Okay I say " The group New Order formed from the remnants of....." and I don't even bother to finish. The stare is still there! She hadn't even heard of friggin NEW ORDER!!!
Am I that old that I have become my worst nightmare - MY PARENTS???

At least you made the attempt to infom the uninformed.

No Cookie, you're that old. [:D] Didn't you take the universal vow to never become your parents? Though I must say, my mother had 5 kids, four of us were into punk/new wave and she knew all the bands. Definitely Joy Division. I remember my younger brother was listening to The Smith's one day and she told me that music was so depressing, if my brother kept listening to it he'd end up like Ian Curtis. I just looked at her and she said she had no choice but to listen to the music and read the magazines we had lying around and she had actually come to like alot of it. My mom is sooo coool.

I must say 82 you were/are lucky. I was and still am the black sheep who listened to the "weird" music. To this day my mother cannot figure out why I do not listen to Bob Seger or Boney M. My sisters still think I am nuts and have forgotten the time they told me U2 sucked (I had just gotten and played the crap out of October)and wouldn't go anywhere.

I still remember how the preps in my high school used to torment me for my music. Then, during my junior year, I was forced to attend a pep rally where- lo and behold!- they were doing a dance team routine to a New Order song. Unbelievable! They danced to Depeche Mode, Yaz, and other bands like that all year. AND they acted like they'd "just discovered" these great "new" bands and everyone loved them for exposing them to this "new" music genre. Unbelievable.

More recently I was at a bowling alley last Xmas with my hubbie's work league and after much beer and a couple of turkeys came to realize that a co-worker of Mr. Shovelbum's was also a New Wave fan. You would have thought we were both adopted and had just discovered our long lost biological families. We made a request of the alley manager to play all New Wave the rest of the night. He and I were dancing and having a great time, but most everyone else stared at us like we were a couple of weirdos (Mr. Shovelbum, on the other hand, already knew that about us[;)]).

I was at a party over the weekend and uttered a quote from Valley Girl and got the same blank stares and many more as I was trying to explain the movie. [:(]

I am so glad that I didn't have to deal with the punk/prep issues in high school. I was in college in the early '80s and college radio was all about new wave, etc...

Once in the early/mid '90s I was teaching a group of middle school students. One girl had on a Cure t-shirt. I asked her what her favorite Cure song was. It was some new release at the time. I started asking her if she liked this song and that from their early days and there it was - the stare[:)] After she came to ... she basically told me she didn't know they had any old music ... she thought they were a new band. Aaarrrggggghhhhh! I wanted to choke her little chicken neck. I should have made her write down all the Cure songs from the beginning ... 100 times each ... [:)][:)][:)]

You should have made her write a research paper on the topic, then she'd be forced to LEARN the material! And she'd thank you for it afterward!

Try not to let their attitude get to you. I'm 43 years old and for everybit of 32 years I've dealt with rude comments regarding "Tims' weird shit music". Even my wife and an old friend never let up with it.

Like they have room to judge coming from fans of Barry Manilow,Billy Joel,Rascal Flatts,Garth Brooks,Travis Tritt,American Idol horseshit,Rap,and god knows what else.

On a positive note,the few times I come across the uninformed they are grateful and enjoy the cd's I make for them whether it's alternative or obscure 70's rock

I am not surprised and it's okay. In the long run, everyone makes their own musical choices. The fact that she has not been exposed to even New Order is sad but...hey...c'est la vie. Try to educate and move on. We can't educate everyone.

On another note, 25 years ago, I liked that type of girl. Blank stare and blinking eyes (the subject matter did not matter in the least). LOL!




We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.
