Make Your DVD Player Region Free

I found this out yesterday and did it last night - seems to have worked:

U.S. Models

U.K. Models

Search for your model, grab your remote and follow the bouncing ball!

DO NOTE THE WARNING (FROM U.S. HACKS PAGE):

WHAT IF A HACK DOES NOT WORK?
Remember that hacks are not guaranteed to work. They may even fry your machine, giving you a nice new boat anchor. Generally, if a hack was added, it worked for somebody.

Only if you buy the players from big name manufacturer's. Go for ones that you've never heard of and are made in China [:)]. If they go flakey after a couple of years, they only cost $30-50, so no big deal.

True. Go to Wal-Mart and see if they still sell Cyberhome DVD players. They are usually between $30 to $60 and hack to region free in about 15 seconds. Quality wise they're shit, but you can watch any DVD on the planet with it.

In case you locate one, here's the hack:

Hit Menu, 1, 9, then the menu screen comes up

Hit Enter, then 0, then Enter

Hit open/close

It's changed!

I've made 3 DVD players region-free. The first 2 had rather short lifespans. I don't know if it was due to the hacking, or if they were POS machines. One of those was a Sharp, so I expected more of it.

I'll be at Wal-Mart contributing to the demise of the American economy and queing up my foreign DVDs if anyone needs me.

If they don't have 'em, there's tons on eBay.

You think you are bad? I still don't know what you guys are talking about! What the hell is a region anyway?

... and that's the catch. Good luck getting a Sony, Toshiba, or Hitachi player to be region-free in North America.

My Yamaha took the coding, but I have yet to put it through its paces since the alteration.
