As I write this I am sitting in Queens Criminal Court (NYC) serving my second day on jury duty.
Yesterday I was interviewed by the judge and 2 lawyers while in the jury box, but wasn't selected as a juror in an armed robbery trial.
A fellow potential juror told me that I was not chosen because, when asked if I had access to medical records in my job, I answered yes.
Of course he was selected as a juror in the case, even though he was a victim of a subway robbery by 5 youths 20 years ago, and could remember all their faces perfectly. Go figure.
This has to be the most inefficient, time-wasting process ever. Hundreds of people sitting around, doing nothing but watching Rachel Ray!!! Your tax dollars at work!!!

Ugh! I got scheduled for the first time coming up December 6th!

Ick. At least where I live in California, if you're not chosen in one day, you're off the hook for another year.

You are lucky you weren't selected. I sat on a jury once in criminal court. The courthouse was a pain in the ass to get to and in a bad neighborhood.
Boring is an understatement. The case shouldn't have gone to trial. A total waste of my time and taxpayers dollars as you said.

I know I'll get picked on for saying this, but I hope I never have to do it. I do not want to leave work for that. I am not interested. They ought to streamline their process and rely on paper applications/ screening/ questionaires. They ought to pick the people who ARE interested in it, maybe like a signup pool or something, full of names of people who have the time, are interested, and are good at it. Years ago, once when I was in college, I got called. I was student teaching at the time out in the remote Alaska Bush, and could not do it even if I wanted to. The paper questionaire was very detailed. One of the questions asked how should rapists be sentenced. Very truthfully, I answered that rapists should be led up to a big old stump in the woods and have their offending unit chopped off with an axe. I never heard from the court system again. This same questionaire also asked you to list bunperstickers you have on your car. I'm all for detailed apps that winnow potential jurors [i]before[/i] you have to go down to the courthouse. Ugh.

Been there--done that. My first day there I was chosen for a malpractice case. Lasted one incredibly long boring week!!!

I have never had to serve & was only put into the general pool once.

Fortunately here, when you get your notice, you just have to call every night to find out of they need you. Usually after the second day they tell you they don't need anyone else & you don't have to call anymore.

I was summoned once, but was immediately dismissed once they learned my background is in journalism. I thought that was pretty funny.

I was dismissed today, after 2 days. It will be six years before I am called [:)]

I recall being dumbfounded when my wife was picked as an alterante juror for a medical malpractice case in the mid-1990's. This was while her fiancee (me) was busy burning the midnight oil as a medical resident at one of the local hospitals. The lawyers knew this, but apparently her opinions regarding the medical malpractice system in the U.S. weren't quite as strong as mine.

About a week later, the judge admonished her for allegedly daydreaming, and promptly threw her off the case. How cool is that?

I got called for jury duty for later this month. Sure I'd love to serve my duty as a citizen of the United States and all that, but just imagine how disruptive this is for a physician. I called in my postponement yesterday. (We're allowed one postponement in New York.)

I've never been called in at all. Even if I did get called, I'm positive I could convince them they don't want me on any jury.

HAHAHA! Pretty funny Bri! Daydreaming of how cool it will be to marry a doctor [:p] Not to mention all the big bucks [;)]
