My new wave best friend died

No, this isn't a snarky post about this board. It's for real. [:(]
I got a call early this morning and found out that the girl who was my best friend in high school circa 82-84, died in her sleep last night. I'll have to post more later but you know how friendships are when you're that age--we felt like we discovered everything together, from Kajagoogoo to Blancmange to Shriekback. Thriftstore pumps and rhinestones, going to Denney's for pie and coffee after a late night dancing at Skoochies, taking the bus to the U District to browse the records shops, teen crushes on boys with with eyeliner and Goodwill overcoats . . . hard to believe the person I shared that with is gone. We had so much fun discovering things--that feeling that you just don't get any longer as you get to be the age we are now. I just made her a Catholic Girls comp.

We'd grown apart over the years even though she lived only a mile away. Through addiction and bad choices she wound up on welfare with six kids and a good-hearted but troubled and useless husband. I spent a lot of time angry with her lately because nature does not always give children to those who want them most or are most capable of caring for them, and due to her many, many issues she was not as good a mom as she should have been. But through all of our differences we kept in touch.

When I first got the phone call I thought it was suicide or OD (and we won't know for sure until the autopsy results come back) but based on what I heard I'm guessing that a combination of illness, sleep apnea, and prescription drugs just caused her to stop breathing.

Anyway, just an important reminder to count your blessings and spend a few happy thoughts thinking about those with whom you discovered NW.

It's very strange and obviously sometimes very sad how people can end up on different paths. It's why if anyone ever asks "if you could do it all over again", I wouldn't dare entertain the thought. It's such an insane and intricate chain of circumstances that brings us to where we are that none of us could possibly know how else our lives might have ended up. Very sorry for your loss Hexi but also very glad you ended up on your path.

Hexi, sorry to here this news. I myself found out earlier this year that an ex-girlfriend died after a long battle with drug addictions. I was truly puzzled how her life ended up that way but I think Blir sums it up nicely "It's such an insane and intricate chain of circumstances that brings us to where we are..." I can't help but think about the six children and where their "circumstances" we lead them. Take care.

So sorry for your loss as well, Hexi. What an unfortunate turn of events for your friend. It is sobering and sad to see what can happen to someone once considered a best friend and what a desperate or hopeless path a person's life can take -- a downward spiral from which they seemingly cannot break free from.

Hang in there and know that she is free of the suffering and pain she was clearly living in. Those poor children will suffer the most and I hope that they have the support they need.

I have two friends like that. One from junior high school and one from college. I too grew apart from the former but his passing would certainly give me pause. His life spiraled beyond anyone's expectations and while that's certainly unfortunate, I subscribe to the "everybody paints their own picture" philosophy. My buddy from college I still keep in touch with and I'd definitely be a changed person if he ever passed. We still talk about music, movies, design, etc. because we've been able to incorporate these childhood interests into our careers. So even though we speak as adults, there's still alot of that youthful fire. We're lucky in that we can say it's all work related [8D]

Hex, I'm sorry you two grew apart but it's understandable. As is your feeling of loss and for that, I feel your pain. Take care.

So sorry, Hexicon. I just found out myself earlier this year that a boyfriend from high school died of a heroine OD. It was shocking to me, even more so because I hadn't really given him much thought after we broke up. Blir's right, though. Life is a strange journey that we can only barely begin to comprehend. Take care!

I'm so sorry for your loss. Something similar happened to my boyfriend this year and I could see how much in pain he was... it must be tough.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. She'd been so troubled for, really, the last twenty years that I think I've been preparing myself for something like this for a long time.

Wow. How sad. Like so many have already mentioned, I am amazed at how a seemingly random series of choices, events, opportunities, obstacles, and sheer chance lead us to where we are in life, and how even one small choice can alter the outcome dramatically. I'm amazed at how two people who start at similar points of origin with so many shared experiences can diverge to end up in completely different places over time. How nice that you kept in touch despite how different your lives became. I'm sorry for your loss and I wish the best for your friend's family. Play the Catholic Girls comp and make a toast to her.

You know, this would make a very poignant addition to your novel...
