I'm hungry so I thought I would kill a few moments with this post. Over here in Ohio (we're called the midwest but I'm further east than west) we call 'em Subs. What do you guys call them where you're at:

Subs to me, having lived mostly in the West.
My husband, who is from CT, calls them grinders.

We just call them what they are made of.

Ex: give me a meatball on italian with cheese.
let me have a turkey on a roll with mustard.

In NY we are all about speed. If someone said I will have a sub sandwich with blah blah blah...they would get a lot of weird looks.

I had never heard of a "grinder" sandwich until recently when a couple of shops opened around here with "grinder" in the name. Didn't strike me as very appetizing. Then again, a submarine doesn't sound very tasty either, unless you have a previously-formed association with a sandwich.

Lived most of life in Ohio where it was always a sub, but also heard it refered to as a hoagy. Here in Louisville we also have the grinder from a place called Jersey Mike's Subs.

Subs mostly, but I hear all the names listed in the poll, except sliders. To me, those are White Castle burgers, and I won't touch them.

My mother owned three sub stores when I was a kid. She did really well with good ingredients and a lot of late nights for the bar crowd.......until a lot of greeks opened stores with gyros and $1.99 mixed meat subs with bologna as one of the meats....gross. People started buying these because of the low price and her stores started to close, cheap food, instead of quality, go figure.
It did take me years to eat a sub after this, so sick of them, I love them now again.

We would order a meatball hero if it's on long bread. Roast beef on a roll if it's just a sandwich.

I went to grade school for about a year in the Seattle area and the cafeteria lady there was from somewhere in NY, and as a result she would refer to the sandwiches on the menu as "heroes". That's the first time I'd heard that kind of sandwich referred to as such, since I am very much a "west of the Mississippi" person. It was also the first time I'd had a meatball hero, which I adored (and when I first started going to Subway back in my South TX hometown in the mid '90s, this is the reason I started out with their meatball sub). Otherwise I'd have just referred to it as a "sandwich" or, post-Subway discovery, a "sub".

Psst... "hoagy" is actually spelled "hoagie". [;)]

From what I've seen posted on the www about them, they apparently don't touch you either. They just slide right out. [xx(]

Which is still true.....my son and his friends drive an hour and a half just to eat those "sliders". I recall a family friend used to laugh at us for calling them "subs"....he said that where he was from, they were called "sliders"....funny thing tho', he was from the Czech Republic.

It's all about speed here too. You don't ask for a turkey w/cheese on a roll with mustard. You ask for a "Belly Buster" or a "Dreamers Delight" or an "Admiral". Pre-configured sandwiches and if you wanted a substitution you would have to deal with the wrath of the people behind you.
