Earworms are those songs, jingles, melodies that you just can't get out of your head. They just repeat and repeat, over and over again.

Often it is the worst, most annoying stuff ever. Fortunately in some cases, like mine today, it wasn't so bad when I woke up with "Shine Silently" by Nils Lofgren looping endlessly in my head. If any of you are familiar with the song, it is the opening horn part that I am hearing.

What's playing in your head? Maybe if you let us know, it will stop!

Ever since Control, I can't get JD's "No Love Lost" out of my head. It has such an incredible beat. I'll go into a fit of air-drums then switch over to air-guitar just as the song explodes right before the first verse. Incredible that this hasn't always been one of my favorite JD tracks.

Lately I've had the opening bird calls from Lene Lovich's Bird Song reverberating through my head. I'll catch myself whistling it throughout the day & wonder what the hell that's from...then I realize, oh yeah...Lene...that's cool.

It's so, so, so much better than the vomit inducing "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows" song from Leslie Gore or Patty Duke or some other chirpy teen girl singer, that gets stuck in my head for months at a time. It's like self-torture & I don't know why it happens.

Just because I've mentioned it here, I know it's going to be stuck there again all month now. I also saw the Simpsons episode recently when they played it twice...I'm doomed!

I hate when that happens. I had Blondie's "Rapture" stuck in my head for weeks. I hate that song and it has formally been announced in my home that that song is forever banished.

I never listen to it and if I hear the first few notes I immediately seek out the source and shut it down (if I can). Why do I wake up with it in my head? I think sometimes the "inner" Max likes to f**k with the "outer" Max.

Right now I have "Cuts You Up" by Peter Murphy trolling about inside but that's ok cause I really like it. If it continues more than a few days I might have to purge it.

After someone at work mentioned We Built This City by Starship I was humming it for 3 days.

And now...I pass it on.

All I did was glance at an article about new developments in growing the flower Edelweiss. Now I can't get the song of the same name from The Sound of Music to stop playing in my head. This is horrible!

This thread reminds me of the episode of South Park in which Cartman must sing the entire lyrics to "Come Sail Away" if anyone even mentions the song.

Funny thing is that that stupid Beyonce commercial with the song "Upgrade" in it has the same affect on the Mrs. I just have to say "Lemme Lemme Upgrade" and she's cussing up a storm, and singing.

I purposefully avoided Christmas carols last month until I was suddenly overtaken with Holiday Cheer two days before Christmas, when we could finally take a day off. I pulled out our holiday records and spun carols for two days straight.

What a mistake - I can't kick them out of my head. Even this morning I am tormented with choruses of 'Angels we have heard on high'.

I too get Christmas songs stuck in my head for weeks, this year it was Winter Wornderland. It took a good month to work it's way out...now that I've mentioned though, there's no telling how long it will be back in there!

My earworms are tied to my mood or a problem I'm solving, so Xmas songs aren't the worst thing I could have on my mind.

To get rid of earworms I either play the song or blast something else to change my mood.

In fact, I joined New Wave Outpost because I was trying to find Max Murdoc's most excellent radio station, Eklektik Radio, to do just that! DH was on the phone. (I was thrwarted by the moderated registrations though and had to wait)

If you haven't heard Max's station I heartily endorse it!
