I was listening to Midnight Oil's "Short Memory" from their excellent [i]10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1[/i] in my car, and its political message got me thinking of how Peter Garrett got into politics later. Now he's a Senator in Australia.

So now I'm thinking: how many other musicians were/ became politicians ? Whether or not they were new wave. We all know about Sonny Bono. Didn't Henry Rollins run for something once ? Who else ?

I think Billy Squire is the governor of Mars. Either him or Greg Khin, I'm not sure any more.

I'm sure the name is just going to draw "Huh?"'s from anyone here who isn't tileboy, randy, Wolverine, Cadman and Swimbigfish, but Rains Rouner, former frontman of The M.I.A.'s, comes to mind. The M.I.A.'s were post-punk (and had a few songs that were flat-out punk)... Rains is now a peace activist between the U.S. and Israel. Isn't that always just the way?

I suppose U2's Bono could count. Although I don't think he holds any official political title, we all know he has been hob-nobbing with all types of politicos in an effort to raise awareness of humanitarian causes around the globe.

He ran for mayor of San Fran in 1979, using the campaign slogan "There's Always Room For Jello" [:D].
