Actually, listening to most of these is like chewing on foil to me. Awful stuff like these:

Bobby Goldsboro - Honey
Paul Anka - Having My Baby
Charlene - I've Never Been To Me
Bread - Diary
Michael Martin Murphy - Wildfire
Terry Jacks - Seasons In The Sun
Commodores - Three Times A Lady (despite some pleasant Jr. High slowdancing memories I don't think I could actually listen to the song all the way through)

I have to admit to liking a few:

Rita Coolidge - We're All Alone (I heard this recently, which got me thinking about this)
Bob Welch - Sentimental Lady
Chicago - If You Leave Me Now

I'm not sure I can articulate why I like some and not others.

I can't say I like any of the songs cited here but I'll give you a really sappy song I like. It's actually from the '60's though...
The Cowsills - The Rain, The Park, and Other Things. You know.."I love the Flower Girl...". Real sappy...yet I like it.


We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

Oh wait...I just thought of a sappy '70's song I like. The Spy Who Loved Me by Carly Simon. I think I wanted to be a spy when I was a kid. Like James Bond. And, of course, get chicks as hot as he did. That song brings back memories. My sister got married a few years ago and they used this as their wedding song. A different choice but it worked.

As an experiment, I decided to play Abba's "SOS" on auto-repeat until I couldn't take it any more. I made it through 4 1/2 times. Based on that, I could probably make it through "Just When I Needed You Most" 3 times, "Seasons in the Sun" twice, and a few others once. These 70s ballads are an anathema to me.

Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey" could turn a peacemaker into a serial killer. Just an awful, awful song. Probably one of the worst ever recorded.

I also loathe Morris Albert's "Feelings." Does anyone know anybody who will cop to buying that shit in 1975?

In the department of sappy '70s ballads I actually like, Paul Davis' "I Go Crazy," Styx's "Babe," Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" and Jefferson Starship's "Miracles."

I'll second Paul Davis and add The Commodores' "Easy", The Bee Gee's "How Deep Is Your Love", pretty much anything by The Carpenters, and my personal favorites Hall and Oates ("Sara Smile" and "She's Gone").

Don't forget the classic thread about this, Frayo, and Mechi. Was DJ Craig the author of that brilliance??

I'm partial to a bit of 10cc (the band that is, not the average volume of male ejaculant that their name refers to!). BTW, "I'm Not In Love" was nicely redone by Olive a few years ago.
