Coldplay: Greatest Band Of Their Time?

It depends on how "we" is defined. If you mean NWOers, then no. They would never even have a chance, because they're not descendants of NW.

If you mean the general radio-listening population, then I say probably, for the same reasons that Applebee's and Chili's are very popular restaurants. They're not bad, not too objectionable, and change things around a little from time to time to keep things interesting. They're not really unique or very satisfying, but you could do worse.

Disclosure: I don't own any Coldplay songs in any format and I have no plans to own any either. I do like "Clocks" and "Speed of Sound".

I don't know a whole lot about 'em. They have a few good songs, but every time I see something with that lead singer, I get the overwhelming impression is that guy WANTS TO BE BONO. [:0]

I guess "their time" would mean the time they are around. It most definitely wouldn't mean before their time -like the 80's or 70's or 60's. I suppose what I'm asking, when people look back to the 2000's will Coldplay be considered one of the greatest bands of that time frame. Hell, many of you would have to vote yes by default almost since you hate every new band out there.
I definitely see the U2 comparisons in general, not necessarily their sound but they do write anthemic songs.
They are by no means my favorite band. Until this last CD, I thought they had some great songs. This last CD has some amazing songs. I have a sneaky suspicion they are poised to becoming one of the favorites of their era. Them or Incubus.

I like them. A lot. I didn't like them for a long time, and then I heard "Clocks" and gave them anther try.

Compared with all the other bands right now, yes, they are one the greatest of their time--meaning now. Will they be one of the greatest bands ever? I don't know. Their previous albums have been good. The latest one is really good, so maybe.

They just seem so derivative of Radiohead to me. And Radiohead sound like a toothless Can meets U2-- In the Hierarchy of modern popular bands I certainly don't dislike them (Coldplay) as much as others (Maroon 5).

Of course I have this old man attitude that I've already heard it before, and what I heard was better. I dont get all the fawning of modern acts (British Sea Power, Sea wolf, (and any other bands referencing 'the sea')The National, The Editors etc etc etc etc etc...

boring..heard it before --done better --- there are a few current bands I do like, (!!!) being one....sue me.[^]

Sure, Coldplay will be considered one of the great bands. But that's only because people generally have no taste.

they have always drawn comparison to Radiohead but if you listen to the last couple of CD's by each of them, I think they have drifted apart. Radiohead is a critic's darling who in my opinion are about as over-rated as it gets with not very many good songs, especially of late. Coldplay may become the people's champ, and based on their album download totals, it might be hard to argue. They haven't had the meteoric rise of some bands and seemed to have built upon each album and improved.
