Sometimes crap. Sometimes some nuggets. Definitely played a part in getting me back into the swing of music more seriously back in 2000 when I picked up that year's winner, Badly Drawn Boy's The Hour of Bewilderbeast (ironically at the now-closing Times Square Virgin Megastore).

I'm a bit ecstatic about this year's list though...

British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?
Burial - Untrue
Elbow - The Seldom Seen Kid
Estelle - Shine
Laura Marling - Alas I Cannot Swim
Neon Neon - Stainless Style
Portico Quartet - Knee-Deep In The North Sea
Rachel Unthank & The Winterset - The Bairns
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Robert Plant & Alison Krauss - Raising Sand
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement

Can you believe it? Radiohead! Radiohead!! How great is that?! Someone will finally hear about this obscure little underrated band that I've been raving about. [:o)]

Nothing on this list comes close to "In Rainbows", but that's a too predictable choice. So I'll root for The Last Shadow Puppets to take it.

Last Shadow Puppets or BSP I guess. Never heard of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. That Estelle song is pretty damn catchy though.

Puppets album is most excellent. Convinced that Alex Turner is a true talent despite his broad appeal...those things usually don't go hand-in-hand. Might be hard to pull it away from In Rainbows. Other might win only if the critics egos are not be able to live with such a mainstream choice. I love the Elbow album. BSP don't stand a chance, though I'm ecstatic about their nomination.

So what is the award actually for? Best Album? They missed 20 or so if it is.

Best British album-only award. Also has the connotation that the mix of nominees represent what the British music scene is about right now. If the BRIT awards are the equivalent of our Grammies, then the Mercury would be equivalent to...um...some mythical good and tasteful award that does not exist in this country.

With that list , Radiohead - In Rainbows is one I really like.

funny, I thought of Lisa Stansfield too, but then again, you could probably say The Last Shadow Puppets are nothing the Arctic Monkeys haven't already covered[;)][:o)]

Elbow it is. Seldom Seen Kid has taken it, and it is a fine alubm, and it's a good recognition of their hard work. It's just not very exciting (or surprising - see my earlier post). I've grown quickly bored with the album.

Many here can imagine who I was rooting for...though without serious hope. It would certainly have made for a great conclusion to human existence if the Large Hadron Collider would have created a black hole on Wednesday and destroyed the earth while BSP played a role in one of the very last interesting cultural events of the human race just the night before.

Perhaps I'm being overly dramatic.

Well I'm guessing that's good news... I only know the two bands you're raving about Blir: BSP and Radiohead--I guess I need to get out more often...[:p]
