Thinking back to what life was like before all this "lousy?" technology made me think of two things that in my past life were always things to look forward to--and by that I mean opening something that was sight unseen. Just the anticipation of what may lie inside was always great--sometimes on opening--it WAS great--sometimes a letdown. What items am I talking about?

A pack of photos you took--sent away and waited for their return hoping you got THE great shot. Digital cameras took all the fun ou tof that-sure--its great to see the picture immediatly but there is no real fun in that.

Second--An lp-preferably one just released. From the inside sleeve--was it a picture?-lyrics?-plain white?--to dropping the needle on the vinyl--always a great experiance if it was a winner. Nowadays--I dont care how much I like the songs on a cd or song I downloaded--it just aint the same.

Used to look forward to a favourite song being played on the radio and tape it to listen to over and over again at-will...

Now you can download it, 'find it' on the net, watch it on various tv shows FTA and cable, afford the cd or single in a heartbeat, take it around with you easily when walking, in the car, exercising, get it emailed to you by friends... it is far easier to get sick of songs these days.

While I did the same thing (set a cassette to tape the radio and listen to favorite tracks over and over and I bought them), I still don't get sick of songs I like no matter how easy they are to get or how many times I listen (as least no more so than before. A played out song is a played out song). I listened to the Candy-O album today while driving. I've only heard it a billion times. Still great listening.

We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

Technology hasn't changed this...

Yet.

I should add.. it's far easier to get sick of the equivilent top-40 type songs these days that 'the kids' listen to (half of that may be because they are mostly rat-shit though).

I still listen to decent music over and over with no troubles.

These days if kids want a song, they can have numerous copies and remixes of it before its even officially released then put it away in the toy box to be forggoten when the next timbaland mix or titty-release from some group of dancing skanky-moles arrives

Excellent post Randy, I totally agree. I was just thinking of the whole lp excitement the other day & how cool it was when lyrics were printed on the inner sleeve or cool pictures were included. A bonus was when it was a gatefold sleeve!

I'm gonna go with the Charlie Brown TV specials. Man, as a kid, those cartoons just signaled the beginnings of certain seasons.

The first biggie to kick-start the fall and winter was It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. There was just something magical about this cartoon. You or your parents looked to the TV Guide to make sure you knew exactly when it was going on. And god forbid if you missed it! It wouldn't be on for another whole freakin year! No videotape you could lazily rent on a whim.

Then of course A Charlie Brown Christmas with that classic classic classic song, "Christmas Time Is Here" by the late great Vince Guaraldi. Those wistful, plaintive flat notes coming off the piano still give me shivers all the way up my spine. This was [i]special[/i] man - once a year special, like seeing an old friend you only saw once the whole year.

Tell me that kids having access to anything they want at their fingertips can ever feel this way. Even the other specials like Be My Valentine..., It's Thanksgiving..., Easter Beagle..., etc were all great. But the two above were in the pantheon of great things to look forward to for me.

How about when the Disney movies would play in the summer. Every couple of weeks they would change the movies. And they always played two different movies for the price of one.
