David Duchovny enters rehab for sex addiction

LOS ANGELES (AP) — David Duchovny, who plays a sex-obsessed character on Showtime's "Californication," has entered a rehabilitation facility for sex addiction.

The 48-year-old actor said he did so voluntarily, in a statement released Thursday by his lawyer, Stanton Stein. He added: "I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family."

Duchovny's publicist, Flo Grace, confirmed the report, which first appeared on the Web site People.com. She and Stein both declined further comment.

"All of us at Showtime wish David and his family the best during this very private time," the network said in a statement.

The second season of "Californication" begins Sept. 28.

Duchovny starred as the conspiracy-minded Fox Mulder on "The X-Files" TV series and in two films. "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" opened in theaters earlier this summer.

He and his wife, actress Tea Leoni, have two children. The couple married in 1997.

No sooner do Madonna and Guy Ritchie announce they are to divorce than I have news of another showbiz marriage that has hit the rocks. And this one involves explicit text messages, sex addiction and adultery.

I can reveal that troubled X Files star David Duchovny and his stunning actress wife Téa Leoni are no longer together.

Just two months after Téa, 42, encouraged her 48-year-old husband to check himself into a rehabilitation clinic, where he received counselling for so-called 'sexual compulsivity', the couple are separating after 11 years and two children. Yet it was not Duchovny's sexual proclivities which led to their bust-up, but Téa's.

In a real-life drama worthy of Duchovny's hit TV series Californication, in which he plays a sex-obsessed writer, I understand the star discovered via text messages on his wife's mobile phone that she had begun a relationship with brilliant Oscar-winning actor - and oddball - Billy Bob Thornton, 53, who was formerly married to Angelina Jolie.

The five-times married Billy Bob admits to suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder. He met Téa when they made a comedy film together earlier this year called, somewhat prosaically, Manure.

I am told they began a friendship, which has developed into something closer. Thornton, a musician with his own band, has been seen with Téa at his gigs. 'She even helps him load and unload his truck,' says a friend of the couple.

Téa, who was previously married to advertising director Neil Tardio, opens next week in Ricky Gervais's critically panned comedy Ghost Town. Duchovny, meanwhile, has started rehearsing with Demi Moore for his latest film, The Joneses.

Thornton, who starred as the U.S. president in Love Actually, has three children by his various wives, plus a four-year-old daughter by his current girlfriend, Connie Angland. But he is reported as saying that he won't wed again because marriage 'doesn't work' for him.

It was Téa who persuaded her husband to receive treatment for 'sexual compulsion proclivity' at the Meadows clinic in Arizona, followed by further treatment at the Keystone centre in Pennsylvania.

'Yes, they have separated,' says Téa's spokeswoman. 'She is living on her own with the children in New York, but we did not want to announce it for the sake of the children until after David had received treatment for his problems.'
