How to play mp4s ?

Attention fellow experts: a friend recently sent me a bunch of DVDRs with some old material, but they are burned as mp4s. When we attempted to play them on our DVD player, a message says "no audio detected, no video detected." Loading them into our computer brought up all the individual files & names, but our computer doesn't play mp4s.
What are your suggestions as to how I can view these ?

mp4s are Apple code, will play in iPod, iTunes... I don't know if they can be converted to mp3--I'm sure someone here knows more about that, then I do...

They'll play in most any Windoze player as well if you just download the Quicktime codec from Apple.

I think she might be trying to play them on a standard compenent DVD player. Most modern DVD players will play MP3 just fine. Thank Steve Job's and Apple for the pushing the MP4 format [}:)] Newer versions of iTunes can convert MP4 to MP3, I don't know if can do it in bulk however....

Assuming you're running Windows ...

If you have WinAmp, and the included decoder plug-in doesn't work, you can try the plug-in here (second post): http://forums.shoutcast.com/showthread. ... id=1177352
You have to remove any current MP4 decoder from WinAmp's plug-in directory first (such as IN_MP4.DLL).

I found that some won't play properly (stuttering, jerky), but you can decode it to WAV and it will be okay.



Whatever you do, DO NOT INSTALL QUICKTIME. You're better off getting Quicktime Alternative @ http://www.free-codecs.com/download/qui ... native.htm
It will install the codecs needed (for use with Windows Media Player or the included Classic Media Player), without the rest of the bloat.
