This guy needs to shut up and quit digging the hole deeper. He is an old fart that needs to get out of the game.

New – Congressman comments on "redneck" region

The Tribune-Democrat

Less than a week after U.S. Rep. John Murtha came under fire for calling Western Pennsylvania a “racist area,” the congressman has used the word “redneck” to describe the area’s past.

In an interview with WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh, Murtha said there is a history of racism in this part of the state.

“The whole area, years ago, was really redneck,” he said.

The longtime Johnstown Democrat apologized last week after he labeled Western Pennsylvania “racist” as he was discussing the presidential campaign with a Pittsburgh newspaper.

Murtha later said he believes voters have begun to look beyond race and instead are focusing on the “policy differences” of the two presidential candidates.

In his Monday interview with WTAE, Murtha sought to further clarify his initial comments.

“What I said, that indicted everybody, that’s not what I meant at all,” Murtha said. “What I mean is there’s still folks that have a problem voting for someone because they are black.”

He again said older voters may have more difficulty voting for a black man for president.

“Particularly older people. They want change but they don’t want to see things go too far,” Murtha told the television station.

Murtha is backing Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama but supported Democrat Hillary Clinton in the primary-election battle.

The congressman also is seeking re-election in the 12th Congressional District, which he has represented since 1974. He faces Republican William Russell on the general-election ballot.

James Carville once remarked about Pennsylvania that it's, "Pittsburgh on one end, Philadelphia on the other, and Alabama in between."
