I haven't posted for a while, even though I see some good stuff around here.
The day before Thanksgiving, we lost Hamlet, our chocolate Lab.
We had to put him to sleep; he had stomach cancer, discovered
suddenly when I took him to the Vet because he wasn't eating.
And you know if a Lab isn't eating, well, it must not be good.
It was so sudden. His brother, Porter the black lab,
spends a lot of time looking out the front window.
Hopefully Ham is in a field full of balls somewhere,
fetching his heart out, just like he did with us.
I just haven't had much heart to post lately.
All your insanity usually cheers me right up. Peace !

Life's what you make it.

I went through the same thing in mid-October. My boy stopped eating much and throwing up a lot. He was 12 and I knew the inevitable was coming. I took him to the vet and it turned out that he had a huge tumor on his spleen that wasn't detected back in May.

He went down hill very very fast and within about 2 days I had to face my worst fears and have him put to sleep. The grief was astoundingly deep and awful. He was the absolute light of my life and I still miss him very much.

I adopted a Golden Retriever puppy on Friday and it's been a big help, although I needed that 2 month period before jumping back in.

Wolvie: I'm sorry to hear about your furry boy, too. Not eating, and throwing up, are worrisome if they are sudden. He was a cutie ! Have fun with your new pup.[:)]
Yes, we miss him so much. He was always ready to fetch a ball, and his absolute enthusiasm for doing that every single day was amazing. It never got old for him. He was only 9.

Hang in there guys. It's hard to explain to non dog people how bad this all is. I lost my two back in May, telling each an intensely heartfelt thanks before putting them to sleep within a couple of weeks of eachother...brutal. I still can't go near where they used to cuddle up without bumming out. I still have to catch myself when making steaks, thinking a split second about what cuts I'm gonna leave for them. Pretty brave Wolvie to jump right back into it with your puppy - good for you man. I can't do that yet. I'd love to see a picture though.

KYYX and Wolverine, both of your dogs were beautiful. Hopefully they are in a place where they got to meet up, hang out, and bark up a conversation about Duran Duran and Blondie. [:)]

My condolences to you KYYX, and to Wolvie and Blir as well. We adopted a dog (who was actually our current boston terrier's daddy) two months ago after the breeder suffered a hardship with her husband dying. We only had him for 3 weeks before we had to put him down due to a brain tumor. He seemed okay for the first 2 weeks albeit a tad disoriented (which we initially dismissed as trouble adapting to his new surroundings), but then he started having violent seizures and it was quickly downhill from there. I tell you we both cried on and off for a good couple days ... it's really heartbreaking. We have since adopted the granddad (believe it or not) and he's doing great ... nine years young; we're keeping our fingers crossed.

The worst part about having pets is outliving them. Hang in there KYYX. You'll make it through [:)]

As a dog lover and owner, my heartfelt condolences go out to you KYYX, and also to Blir, Mike and Wolvie. Hold on to the memories and expect that they are all having fun together on another plane.

I'm a dog owner also, with a Golden who is around 11 1/2 years old. It breaks my heart to watch her age and I can't help but imagine what life might be like without her. You all have heartfelt sympathy for your losses.

A couple of years ago, she blew out her knee as she chased a rabbit. We spent the $2500 to have her knee repaired, including adding some metal pieces into her leg to help hold it all together. Some non-dog-owning family members looked at us like we were insane to go to that expense; but dog owners understand.
