This isn't just a muslim thing. Religion in general can cause those with weak minds to do some pretty savage things.

I'm no expert on Islam, but those who practice it seem to follow it to the letter, e.g., "an eye for an eye", killing homosexuals, women are property (& polygamy) etc. You'll find many of those very same things in the judeo-christian old testament, by the way, but it seems that Islam actually practices those verses, whereas in the west, we* tend to cherry-pick the feel-good verses and pretend the rest don't exist. (*Except for the christian fundies, of course.)

That's mostly because we have some sense in this hemisphere of the world. Call me a progressive liberal but I think religion should evolve along with the rest of society. These people belong in another century. I just don't see a moral equivalent.

I'm not claiming there's a moral equivalent. I'm just saying that our holy scriptures share some of the same books & beliefs, and that islam demands more strict adherence than we do. In islam, the koran is treated as the literal word of god. In the west, not so much.

I've been down this road many many times in the past on this board and the discussion is tiresome but I'll only add that the Christian fundamentalist movement is incredibly secular. A true Christian fundamentalist would sell everything they have, renounce society and devote their lives to caring for the sick and poor i.e. following Christ's example. About the only person offhand I can think of who actually did this was Mother Theresa. Even the most stereotypical Christian fundamentalist in this day and age is driving around in an SUV and thinking that going to church on Sunday makes them an exceptional human being which is about as far from Christ's message as you can get. I can't take that kind of so-called "fundamentalism" seriously nor can I rationally compare it to infinitely more devout religious sects.

I never take those claims seriously. I think people just say them for shock value. They can't truly be serious.....?

All of this over some story that was written years ago and transcribed far too many times that it bears little resemblance to the original story.

You're born, you live, you die. End of story. If you want to believe then go right ahead but leave the rest of us (who feel as though it's just a storybook) out of it.
