As far as this Star Trek film per se, I'd give it two enthusiastic thumbs up. I've always been a fan of origin stories and have waited years for this one. The franchise definitely needed a shot in the arm and taking it back in time has definitely been the Hollywood trend for the past decade (thanks George Lucas!). One very minor (or very major) inconsistency that stuck out was the Enterprise being built in Iowa as opposed to San Francisco according to lore. Technically, the writers can do anything they want with Star Trek because this is now an alternate universe, a plot device that has always been a part of Star Trek series, books, etc. Time travel stories have always been among fans' favorites and now it seems that it's the way that Star Trek will always be able to be retold. It also creates a way for TOS actors to be able to cameo in future films. I thought these new, young actors were delightful and successfully dug out the essence of the characters while deepening their mythologies. This is especially true for the Kirk / Spock / McCoy triad, whose relationship was always what gave the heart of Star Trek it's beat. The passion of Bones and the logic of Spock brought into balance by Kirk. Awesome. I could go on but I'd have to start giving spoiler information and that might not be fair. Great characters and acting all based on fantastic writing and dialogue, which is the basis for any good movie. And the casting was spot on!
And haven't we all had the fantasy of being with some exotic green girl from another planet ever since Kirk broke that barrier back in the 60s?
