Man, I LOVED this store. But truth be told, I haven't been there in ages. The fact is that for years I've been buying pretty much all my CDs online. It's just cheaper and easier to find what I want even after shipping and handling.

HMV, Tower, The Wiz, Circuit City and now Virgin. We're witnessing the end of an era, folks. Hey, at least we can scavenge the aisles for clearance sales [:I]

The Mega store closing in LA (on Sunset Blvd.) made my 11 pm local news.

it's the end of the cd century,this morning there was an intervieuw with someone from a recordcompagnie, in the future cd will sell less and less, he said vinyl will survive the cd.
Last year they sold more vinyl then the year before in belgium, don't know what about USA

And with the quick death of record stores all around the country comes the slow death of my music fandom. I'll miss the "culture", for lack of a better word, of browsing in shops for hours and stumbling across a CD that I never knew existed or finding that amazing deal (Virgin had quite a few CD imports for as low as $7). There are only a handful of mom and pop shops left in my area and they're sadly jacking up the prices to turn a profit which effectively slows up sales and causes them to go out of business anyway. A sad state of affairs.

Too bad we don't have a government program that would use massive amounts of taxpayer dollars to prop up unprofitable businesses, especially those that had unsustainable business models and bad managements that ran them into the ground.

I do agree with this comment, I used to spend hours at Sam the Record Man in my youth. At the same time, I'm finding the internet to be even more powerful in finding new music that I otherwise never would have heard...often in foreign languages. And you can chat online with people in far flung places about the music. I know it's not quite the same thing, but the last 5 years in cyberspace have been every bit as rewarding to me as those days flipping through the import section.

True, plus the internet isn't anywhere near as dusty as Sam's was.

Point#1 - Marv's opening statement says it all. He loved this store but hadn't been there in ages. I guess that's what has happened to all of these chains. Okay to browse when time allows but time just doesn't come in large enough chunks. The convenience of the internet wins.
Point#2 - I really, really miss the small, non-chain record stores. Growing up on Long Island, Titus Oaks in Hicksville and Slip Disc in Valley Stream were the best.


We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

i agree with that, i prefer the small independent music store , instead of the big chain stores.
i remenber a small store, where i always bought my records, the guy knew what i liked so every time i went there he showed me the new records that could interest me. But those days has gone he had to close because of the mega stores, and now those megastores are also closing or selling other products like dvd, games etc..

So when is Sam Goody gonna die already? I hate that place. Are they even still around?

I went crazy when I got inside the Times Square one... for me, there was so much stuff that I cannot get here in Argentina and the prices were even better than here (especially in terms of PS2 games). And the place is iconic... you always see it in movies and you almost associate it immediately with the city.
But truth is that as the Internet grows, cd's have become obselete... so the disappearence of record stores is expectable.
It is going to be replaced by a Forever 21 store (prefer records, but I got a coat there that I love).
